Under-display cameras are coming, but prepare for potato quality photos for a few years

Notches have been a design abomination ever since they were introduced, cutting into usable display area for no other reason than to minimize bezels. However, we knew from the start that notches were never here to stay – they're an interim solution meant to bridge the industry's move towards completely obstruction-free displays on the front of phones. The same is true for finicky sliding mechanisms for front cameras that come with disadvantages such as limited water resistance and yet another point prone to failure. Today though, Oppo has tweeted a video of its prototype under-display front camera, giving us a glimpse into the promised land (of bezel-less screens).

Plausible OnePlus 7 leak shows all-screen, notch-free, sliding design

What we've determined is a plausible OnePlus 7 leak has just popped up over on Slashleaks. The image compares an unknown device, presumed to be the Oneplus 7, to the current OnePlus 6T. Both appear to be in cases to disguise their identities (not an uncommon practice during testing), but a few key details are visible. This new phone skips the notch and appears to have a sliding design. If it's legit, the OnePlus 7 might finally deliver the all-screen dream to the mainstream.

It's been a strange year for smartphone design. The notch has infiltrated pretty much every major OEM at every price point, yet everyone seems to hate it (or at least those most vocal on the internet). Manufacturers keep plowing on, however, with even Samsung jumping on the camera cutout bandwagon ahead of the Galaxy S10 launch. If you're patiently waiting for the display cutout fad to end, it's good to know some Chinese smartphone makers have already come up with alternative solutions for bezel-free phones.
