[Update: APK available] Google Camera will promote Pixel's Night Sight to the main interface, at the expense of Panorama

A build of Android Q beta 5 leaked yesterday with a new sensitivity setting for the back gesture, and hidden within it is a new version of Google Camera 6.3. The current stable build we all have is v6.2, so 6.3 is still an unreleased update and could change in the future before it reaches the public. But it does give us a glimpse into what Google is working on with its Camera app. Namely, the Pixel's excellent Night Sight mode will be more easily accessible.

[Update: More samples] Huawei P30 Pro beats Pixel 3 in some low-light photos

Huawei's cameras have become exceptional over the past few years, and earlier this month, the company unveiled more phones with excellent camera performance. While the P30 and P30 Pro have already turned heads with its 5x optical zoom, its low-light performance appears to beat the Pixel's Night Sight in certain cases.

Samsung is working on a Night Sight clone called Bright Night

Samsung's Pie-based One UI will come with a plethora of changes like a night mode interface, and buttons shifted toward the bottom of the display. According to a new report from XDA, it'll also come with a new camera mode called "Bright Night." You can probably guess what that is—it's Samsung's version of Google's almost magical Night Sight feature on the Pixels. Will it be as magical? We just don't know yet.

Pixel Night Sight also works in daylight, reducing noise and boosting resolution

Turns out that Google's new Night Sight mode for Pixels, formally released just earlier today, has some non-night utility. In a bit of a twist, you can use it in the daytime as well for "denoising and resolution improvements" inherited from another Google Camera feature: Super Res Zoom. The results demonstrated look pretty good, so long as you're willing to hold your Pixel steady.

And according to Google, Night Sight is rolling out for all Pixel devices, past and present, in the coming days.

Update Notes for YouTube, Google+, YouTube Music, Google Camera, Photos, and Wear OS (October 28, 2018)

Every week, I examine somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred app updates while looking for changes. The most interesting things turn into APK Teardowns or Download posts. Many of the remaining updates are unremarkable, amounting to a few bug fixes, routine updates to libraries, or even just pixel-level adjustments to layouts and images. However, there are usually a few updates that land somewhere in between. I don't want to spam readers with dozens of short posts, but I hate to ignore things that people might want to know about, so I'm going to wrap up the leftovers for a little weekend reading and call it Update Notes.

Modded Google Camera APK enables Night Sight for all Pixel devices (and it's impressive)

The guys at XDA Developers often like to tinker with APK files to enable hidden features, trigger specific behaviors, or spoil Google's surprises prematurely. Their latest software shenanigans involve Google's Camera app and the promised Night Sight feature that is supposed to come next month.

Which Pixel 3 features are coming to older Pixel phones (and which will remain exclusive)

Google's Pixel 3 and 3 XL didn't pack a whole lot of hardware surprises, considering the unceasing deluge of leaks over recent months, but the software was another story. There were plenty of new camera features shown off at the Made by Google 2018 event, with oodles of machine learning magic to go around. Unfortunately for owners of older Pixel phones, not all of these new features will be coming to older handsets. For your convenience, we put together a list of all the major software changes that will (and won't) be coming to previous models.

Google's Pixel 3 has plenty of new and upcoming camera features

The biggest advantage of Pixel ownership, outside Google's highly optimized software experience, is the camera. Pixels have been consistently near or at the top of the pack when it comes to photo quality, and in no small part that's because of that Google software. A camera is more than just hardware, image processing can be as (or more) important than simply having a good sensor, and Google has included plenty of camera improvements this year. Let's take a look.
