Science now says your phone's yellow tinted 'night mode' could be worse for your sleep

In what should come as a surprise to no one, it turns out just making your smartphone's screen kind of yellow may not stop it from keeping you awake. In fact, according to a study out of the University of Manchester, that yellow-shifted "night light" is even worse for helping you get to sleep than just leaving your phone in the standard untinted mode.

The reasoning behind using a yellow tint on your screen was, at least, based on scientifically plausible principles. In your eye, a protein called melanopsin responds to the intensity of light, and specifically, it responds more strongly to light of a shorter wavelength.

[Update: Available for all] Twitter for Android adds OLED-friendly 'lights out' mode in latest alpha

Twitter joined the night-mode party way back in 2016 with an option to darken the app’s blindingly white background to a more comforting tone of blue. It surely worked back then, but with the recently renewed fad of OS-wide dark modes, Twitter’s implementation pales in comparison. This is supposedly changing soon as the company has begun testing "lights out" mode for its Android app.

[Update: Delayed] Twitter shares some love with AMOLED users with true-black dark mode

Twitter was amongst the early ones to release a night mode for its app. However, even though it's been around since 2016, the interface uses shades of midnight blue rather than black, which might be easier on the eye but doesn't help save as much battery as turning the pixels off on AMOLED screens. The social media giant is now addressing this by rolling out a new "Lights out" option that lets you switch to true-black tones that not only look darker but also reduce power consumption on AMOLED panels.

[Update: Rolling out] Microsoft is reportedly working on a dark mode for Outlook

Dark modes are quite popular these days, both thanks to their eye-pleasing appearance but mostly because they help reduce battery usage on AMOLED displays. Therefore, to delight users and remain competitive on the market, many companies are working on developing a darker theme for their apps. Microsoft is one of them, as it announced it was designing one for OneNote back in April and is now doing the very same with its mobile email client.
