Nexus 6 receiving new 7.1.1 update, upgrades some devices stuck on 7.0

The Nexus 6 had a long run for a phone originally released in 2014, but last October seemed to mark the end of software updates. For a phone that stopped seeing major Android upgrades in 2016, Google kept security updates rolling until 2017—even if they sometimes came with some unfortunate and obnoxious baggage. Now here we are in 2018, and somewhat randomly a new update seems to be rolling out for the Nexus 6.

The new build is N8I11F, and so far as we can tell, the only difference seems to be a change in baseband. It's still Android Nougat 7.1.1, it's still on the October 2017 security patch, and the kernel version appears to be the same.

After much anticipation, LineageOS 15.1 (based on Android 8.1) was announced last month. Only a handful of devices had official 15.1 builds at the start, but over time, more have been moved up to Oreo. The Nexus Player, OnePlus One, and Oppo Find 7 were recently added to the roster - and now three more devices are coming.

Google is finally pushing Android 7.1.1 to the Nexus 6 again

The Nexus 6 was the launch device for Android 5.0 Lollipop back in 2014, and it's been getting updates ever since. The problem, however, is not all those updates have been good. After deploying some bugged OTA updates earlier this year, Google is finally sending out Android 7.1.1 to the Nexus 6.

Unsupported: The best Nexus 6 ROMs to check out in a post-update world

As of April 3rd, 2017 the Nexus 6/Shamu has truly reached end of life status. Although we knew it was coming, it seems it was easier to keep the buildbots running until more major changes were made. We’d like to take this time to sit back and reminisce on our fond, and large, memories of the device. Death, however, is not the end, but a new beginning. Or, at least, an excuse for those of us without upgrade fever to move ourselves over to a nice and shiny new ROM. While Google may have given up on Shamu, some devices just can’t stay down.

[Update: Google responds] Android 7.0 OTA update is being pushed to Nexus 6 phones running 7.1.1

Nexus 6 owners just can't seem to catch a break. It took longer than usual for it to receive 7.0 Nougat, and 7.1.1 took a while too. Then several bugs on 7.1.1 were discovered, but they were fixed in the recent March security update. Oh, but that update temporarily broke Android Pay.

Now many users are reporting their Neuxs 6 phones are receiving an over-the-air update to Android 7.0... while they're already on Android 7.1.1.

[Update: It's fixed] The Nexus 6 Android 7.1.1 update brought with it some speakerphone echo

Nexus 6 owners had cause to rejoice a few days ago when Android 7.1.1 finally hit the beastly phone. It sat on 7.0 for quite a bit after its younger brethren received the update. However, now it seems that the celebration has come to a slight hiccup. It appears that the Shamu is suffering from a speakerphone echo bug. Yikes.

Android 7.1.1 image and OTA files finally available for the Nexus 6

Google's shiny new Pixel phones and the slightly older Nexus 5X and 6P, and the Pixel C tablet have had access to the latest and most tasty flavor of Nougat for a month now, but the Nexus 6 (from 2014, if we're keeping score) has been puttering along on the more outdated 7.0 build. As promised, the 7.1.1 update is now available for Nexus 6 owners in both full system image and over-the-air update form - though of course, it may be a while before you see the actual OTA roll out to your phone.
