The success of that phone led other OEMs to target lower prices, and the battle rages to this day. However, Motorola has moved the Moto G a bit more up-market. Each successive generation has been a little more expensive, but some premium smartphone features are still missing.

Moto G7, G7 Power, and G7 Play hands-on: Is Moto losing the thread?

Motorola enjoyed massive success with the original Moto G phone. It came along at a time when reasonably priced unlocked phones were virtually non-existent, but the Moto G was soon joined by other low-cost devices. The value proposition has weakened over time as those other low-cost phones crowd the market, but the G-series has largely carried Motorola. The company didn't even bother to launch a full-fledged Moto Z flagship phone in 2018—the Z3 was a Verizon-exclusive phone engineered merely to plug into the still-unreleased 5G mod.

Moto G7 CAD-based renders show off waterdrop notch and rear fingerprint sensor

Thanks to renders based on factory CAD designs, we're getting our first look at the next incarnation of Lenovo/Moto's popular mid-range smartphone. The Moto G7 isn't due to be launched until 2019, but we now know to expect a new display with a waterdrop notch and curved corners with the fingerprint reader embedded in the 'M' logo on the back (why it took Moto so long to start doing this, I have no idea).
