Motorola Releases Open Source Kernel For The Third Generation Moto G

Ever since its introduction the Moto G series has been a leader in the mid-range market, arguably outshining the flagship Moto X thanks to its excellent value and featureset. The third version was released just a few hours after Motorola announced it on stage late last month, and as is the company's wont, it's running the latest public release of Android (5.1.1) at launch. Now the open source kernel for the Moto G 2015 is available, just like its predecessors.

Motorola Details Plans To Patch The Stagefright Vulnerability For 2013 Phones And Later

Google and the various major Android device vendors and carriers are scrambling to patch the recently-discovered Stagefright exploit, a weakness in Android's multimedia processing that can allow remote access via a simple MMS message. Google has already begun patching Nexus devices, and Samsung is working its way through its extensive product range starting with flagships. Yesterday Motorola released its plans to update its phones.

So which devices will get the fix? Basically everything Motorola has made since 2013, including carrier variants and DROID models for Verizon in the US. Here's the full list:

  • Moto X Style (patched from launch)
  • Moto X Play (patched from launch)
  • Moto X (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto X Pro
  • Moto Maxx/Turbo
  • Moto G (1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen)
  • Moto G with 4G LTE (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E (1st Gen, 2nd Gen)
  • Moto E with 4G LTE (2nd Gen)
  • DROID Turbo
  • DROID Ultra/Mini/Maxx

Some third-gen Moto G phones (released late last month) have been patched from launch, but others will need an over-the-air update.

Motorola's Latest Commercial For The New Moto G Is Actually Pretty Hilarious

As we know, most smartphone commercials are, at best, OK. Many are less than OK, and some are just downright awful (see also: HTC-RDJ). Apple manages to score a hit every once in a while, but even their ads can come off as corny and contrived (or just boastful) sometimes.

Perhaps the greatest unicorn of all in smartphone advertising is a legitimately chuckle-worthy commercial. They're rare beasts, and even if that chuckle is from a completely WTF place (see: G Flex, ad sadly taken down), a laugh is a positive reaction. Usually. Anyway, Motorola made this new commercial for the Moto G and we all thought it was pretty funny.

Motorola Officially Unveils Two Models Of The Moto G 2015: 5-Inch Screen, Snapdragon 410, 13MP Camera, 1 Or 2GB Of RAM, 8 Or 16GB Of Storage

Motorola's press event is underway, but various portions of the company have already revealed the star of the show: the new Moto G. The 2015 version of Moto's mid-range device is a mix of old and new, keeping some of the more affordable portions of the phone intact while upgrading some of the most important elements. Specifically, the 2015 Moto G offers optional extra RAM and storage and improves its predecessor's lackluster camera to a 13-megapixel model.

Here's the breakdown: the phone keeps the 5-inch 720p screen from the 2014 version, but upgrades the internals with a Snapdragon 410 processor from Qualcomm and a 13MP rear camera (5MP on the front), the same camera as the Nexus 6, plus a color-balancing flash.

Motorola's Native FM Radio App Updated With Material Design, Music Recording, Sleep Timer, And Usability Improvements

If you've got a Moto G or Moto E, your phone has an FM radio built right into the design. Motorola's official app for using the FM tuner isn't much to write home about, but it's become considerably better today. The updated app (version 02.00.0045, according to the Play Store) updates the player's user interface to a fresh Material Design theme, now with a fetching teal and white color scheme.

Latest Moto G Leak Is A Fairly Long Promotional Video That Shows Off IPX7 Water Resistance, Answers More Questions About The Upcoming Phone

The upcoming release of the third generation of Motorola's Moto G has been an especially leaky one. Coming hot on the heels of today's accidental publishing of the phone's Moto Maker page, a promotional video for the Brazilian market has found its way to YouTube.

One meaningful thing we get from this particular leak is that, unlike Motorola's company secrets, the Moto G will be watertight. The promo boasts of IPX7 certification, meaning the 2015 Moto G will have modest waterproofing that will protect it from splashes, rain, and brief submersion up to 1 meter deep.

The video, which we have mirrored here, confirms much of what we have heard about the Moto G and also may lay to rest some of the false rumors going around.

Motorola Accidentally Leaks 2015 Moto G Options, Includes Up To 2GB Of RAM And Multiple Colors

We all know that a new Moto G is coming very soon, probably at Motorola's "find your match" event on July 27th. Someone over at Moto HQ must have an itchy trigger finger, though. The Moto Maker page for this phone was available on Motorola's website for a short time today before it was pulled (redirects to the homepage now). We do, however, have a screenshot of the configuration options courtesy of a Reddit user.

Leak Suggests The New Moto G Will Have Moto Maker Customization

The original Moto X was launched with Moto Maker customization options, and the second iteration expanded the selection of materials. Through it all the modest Moto G has been mostly left out of the fun, but a leak from Evan "@evleaks" Blass points to possible Moto Maker support for the upcoming Moto G refresh.
