Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5 vs. TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS: Which wearable works for you?

Mobvoi makes both of these watches, but they're not necessarily aimed at the same people

Mobvoi finds itself in an interesting place in the wearables market and routinely finds itself among the best in the business. Look at the best smartwatches for Android, and you'll find at least one of the TicWatch models there. The TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra already made the cut, and it's probably only a matter of time before the newer TicWatch Pro 5 also finds its way there.

Smartwatches — once hailed as a companion screen for phones on your wrist — are now rapidly making strides as essential health partners in our daily lives. From monitoring heart rate and blood pressure to detecting fall incidents and assessing blood oxygen saturation, they can now measure biomarkers that help create a detailed profile of our physical wellness.

For a long time, Google seemed ready to give up on the wearables market. Then Google revitalized its wearable efforts with Wear OS 3 and the eventual launch of its first smartwatch, the Pixel Watch. And although Mobvoi has been in the flagship wearables market for years, the TicWatch Pro 5 is its first Wear OS 3 wearable.

Mobvoi reveals why it's struggling to update your TicWatch to Wear OS 3

A closed beta for Mobvoi's Wear OS 3 update may begin 'soon'

Wear OS 3 was the biggest thing that happened to Android smartwatches in a long time with the arrival of the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 5 more recently. But outside some of the top Android smartwatches, the revamped Wear OS still hasn’t made it to a lot of popular watches even two years after its initial release. Many Mobvoi TicWatch users have been eagerly waiting for the Wear OS 3 update to hit their smartwatches, but it looks like they will have to wait a tad longer.

When searching for a smartwatch, you might stumble upon a lot of offerings from Mobvoi. It makes some of the best Wear OS-based smartwatches in both budget and premium categories. Its latest product, however, comes without Google's Wear OS, but offers plenty of health-focused fitness features on the cheap. The Beijing-based company has taken wraps off the TicWatch GTH Pro, an upgrade to last year's TicWatch GTH.

Mobvoi TicWatch E3 review: All dressed up with nowhere to go

An artificially long wait for Wear OS 3.0 could be a hindrance

Thanks to Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 and the long-awaited Wear 3.0 update, there's no denying that there's a reinvigorated interest in the platform. Not that you’d know from using the TicWatch E3. The E3's biggest issue is the inopportune release timing—this watch is the definition of a mixed bag with Wear OS still in flux. The good news: this smartwatch offers the latest Snapdragon Wear 4100 chipset, which should guarantee solid performance for years to come. The bad news: Wear OS 2.3.

While we're all waiting for Google's revamped Wear OS to drop later this year, there's only one watch running Android worth picking up right now: Mobvoi's TicWatch Pro 3. A year after its release, it's still the only wearable with Snapdragon's Wear 4100 chip. Mobvoi has done a great job keeping its flagship watch updated since launch, and now it's doing the same with its partner app. The latest update to its app refreshes the design to make it easier to manage your device and track your fitness.

Grab a Wear OS watch on the cheap

Mobvoi just released the new TicWatch 3 Pro, which is (by most accounts) the best Wear OS smartwatch you can buy right now. While that model isn't on sale, Mobvoi has discounted all of its other smartwatches by as much as 33%, but the sales end today. The cheapest model up for grabs is the TicWatch S2 for $125.99 ($54 off), an older Snapdragon Wear 2100 watch with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 5ATM water resistance, and a heart rate sensor. You won't get an amazing Wear OS experience with that hardware, but it's enough to check notifications from your wrist. The TicWatch S2 Pro for $146.99 ($63 off) is a better value, with its 1GB RAM and NFC support for Google Pay, but still uses the ancient Wear 2100 SoC.
