I love JotterPad. I've said it before, but I thought I'd preface with this disclaimer and then convince you why you should love it too. I'm not in the business of coercing anyone, but I think we'd all be better off if we did more writing, be it regular note taking, prose, poetry, journaling, or anything that involves putting a series of words in an order that makes sense with a decent serving of imagery and correct grammar sprinkled on top. The SoundCloud Android app has received a slight visual touch-up in the latest update, version 14.12.18-43. Users will now see a slightly more spacious action bar, rounded menus, and Lollipop notifications. These tweaks sit on top of previous user interface changes that still look bright, colorful, and clean.
Another change takes effect only when you pause music. The changelog says that the background album art gets blurred, but on my Nexus 7, I only noticed dimming. Read More
It appears Google really doesn't want to leave any stone unturned when it comes to easing its own apps into material design (no matter how long it may take). The latest to get an incremental refresh is Google Opinion Rewards - the app has been updated with a revised launcher icon (seen in the thumbnail for this post), and a new toolbar inside the app. The icon is a bit closer to material, but doesn't carry the exact same use of shadows as Google's other recent updates. Trello for Android, a popular task management app that describes itself as "a whiteboard with super powers," got a big update today, introducing the app's "first foray into material design." The update comes with revamped layouts, new navigation paradigms, and tons of aesthetic improvements.
In a post to the Trello blog, Dan Lew explains that the revamp was "a ton of work," noting that not a single corner of the interface went unnoticed - the entire interface was given close inspection with Google's new design philosophies in mind, but Lew stresses that the core experience remains the same. Roman Nurik's Muzei, the live wallpaper that puts art (or any other collection of images) front and center on your home screen, got a big update to version 2.0 today.
The most noticeable changes are in the app's interface, which has been updated for Lollipop. The design stays true to the experience many users are already familiar with, but adds some new touches, including a revised launcher icon, and a FAB for adding images to the "my photos" category. Read More
Android Wear is receiving one of its major updates in the next days to 5.0 with a lot of goodies in tow, like official support for custom watch faces, undoing for notification dismissal, and more. The app counterpart on Android devices is getting updated too to keep up with these new features, and that new version is starting to roll out now.
The update bumps Android Wear (the app, not the software running on your watch) to 1.0.5 and doesn't seem to bring much beside a spiffy interface update to a more Material look. Read More
Back when we first took a look at the design initiative that would become "material design," we noted that Google planned to update apps incrementally, with changes happening over an unspecified period of time, until they'd evolved to full compliance. A couple of months ago Hangouts began its journey, but to many the app still doesn't feel quite up to par. A messy, improperly-layered drawer, lack of some familiar actions from the app's previous iteration, and of course no revised launcher icon are a few complaints begging for resolution. Read More
The update everyone has been waiting for is finally here - YouTube has been updated with some material design goodness. The app's makeover is essentially what you'd expect - along with circular avatars (per Google's spec), it features a tall, tabbed toolbar in YouTube's signature vibrant red brand color, a full-height material nav drawer, and a clean white background.
Channels receive special attention, with Lollipop's Palette API pulling colors from the channel art to color the app's toolbar. Read More
It's update Wednesday, and you know what that means. Well, yeah... updates. I guess it's sort of in the name. But at any rate, lately that specifically means material themes are coming to all your favorite Google apps. Today the new version of Google Keyboard is available to all in the Play Store. Or rather, it will be soon. You don't have to wait for it to reach your account, though. Read More
Podcast lovers take their listening hobby seriously. Just ask me. I got into the habit about 18 months ago and it has since become a bit of a daily addiction. Whether I'm driving, walking, taking care of chores, shopping, or doing any other menial activity, there's a set of buds in my ears and one of dozens of podcasts playing through. It makes for great entertainment and it can also be very educational. In terms of apps, I'm firmly rooted in the PocketCasts clan. Read More
