This year, Google has spent considerable time overhauling its apps with an Android 12 Material You redesign. Google Keep on Wear OS was updated with a fresh new design this week, and other apps like Google Translate, Play Books, and more were updated with Material You widgets earlier this year. Google Drive is the newest app the company has improved with a new circular widget capable of dynamic theming, but the changes are only visible on tablets for now.

For better or worse, Google's Material You is one of the most significant redesigns Android has ever seen. A big part of that overhaul focuses on the use of app widgets, and it finally feels like companies are paying attention to them again. Back in the December feature drop, Google announced a new library widget for Play Books, and now three months later, it's finally rolling out.

It's a big day for software updates, as Android 12L, March's security patch, and a new Feature Drop for Pixels are hitting phones right now. And while the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are facing yet another delay, here's the good news: you don't have to wait to get some of the best new features on your device right now. A long-in-the-works battery widget is spreading to users right now.

Google Photos is passing along a taste of Material You to everyone, even if you don't have a Pixel with Android 12. The app has launched new widget shapes in line with the new design guidelines.

Ahead of the public release of Android 12, Google is seemingly giving every app it can a Material You makeover. After Google Phone, Calculator, and Clock, the big G has now turned its attention to YouTube Music and is working on a Material You widget revamp for it.
