LineageOS 15.1 now available for the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL

The Nexus devices of old were some of the best phones when it came to custom ROMs, and while the Pixels are still popular options for software mods, CyanogenMod/LineageOS has never offered official builds. I'm not sure why, but I assume it had something to do with the A/B partitioning scheme, or perhaps there was not a maintainer available to work on it.

LineageOS announces new leadership, a custom recovery, and support for more devices

The last time we covered LineageOS, the most popular custom Android ROM, it started supporting a handful of new devices with Android 8.1 builds. The project published Changelog 19 yesterday, which goes over some recent changes to the ROM and the community supporting it. There are some leadership changes, more newly-supported devices, and a new custom recovery.

When the OnePlus One debuted back in 2014, it was sold as an enthusiast phone with insane bang for the buck. Fast forward four years, and Android 8.1 Oreo in the form of LineageOS 15.1 has just been released for it. The OPPO Find 7a and Find 7s and Galaxy S5 Plus/LTE-A are getting 15.1 as well, and the Huawei Ascend Mate 2 4G has returned with LOS 14.1.

LineageOS apologizes for late and 'bad taste' April Fools' joke

Every year on April Fools' day we see many companies and organizations try their hand at comedy in a bid to score some good publicity. Some get it spot on — my personal favorite came from the European Parliament, claiming on Twitter that all EU passports would become blue. Inevitably, some get it spectacularly wrong, and in the Android community this year that unwanted accolade goes to LineageOS. The team behind it has now issued an apology.

In a follow up to its original and harmless announcement of the legitimate cryptocurrency LOSCoin, LineageOS released an update that featured a persistent notification and a warning.

LineageOS 15.1 Oreo arrives on the Nexus Player, two more devices get 14.1

After three years of official support, Google confirmed yesterday that the long-lived Nexus Player would no longer receive Android updates. While Android Oreo will continue to serve most users just fine, the custom ROM community will likely keep it updated for years to come. LineageOS already supported the set-top box with Nougat builds, but now it has been updated to Android 8.1 Oreo.

LineageOS opens up to developers with new SDK, including APIs for styles and profiles

From the ashes of the popular CyanogenMod custom ROM, LineageOS has emerged as a worthy successor, providing users the same near stock experience with a few useful customization options. LineageOS 15.1 announced with Android 8.1 base, customizable colors, and more

Many open-source projects, LineageOS included, live by the same motto - 'don't ask for an ETA.' Most developers of Lineage have other jobs and responsibilities, so large undertakings (like creating a new major update) take time. At long last, the waiting is over - LineageOS 15.1 is official, and it's coming to a device near you.

LineageOS turns one year old

CyanogenMod was the most popular custom ROM for years, with many other major ROMs being based on CM. However, the project came to an abrupt end last year, when Cyanogen Inc shut down (it reorganized into an autonomous tech company earlier this year). Most of the CyanogenMod community, which never received much support from Cyanogen Inc in the first place, reorganized under the 'Lineage' name.

From time to time, the team at LineageOS will post changelogs of changes/fixes that have been implemented since the last changelog was published.
