'LG Pay Quick' trademark application pops up in US and Europe

LG first launched its mobile payments platform in June 2017, but only in South Korea. Since then, the company accidentally published a broken payments app with muddled branding in early 2018, and later confirmed LG Pay would arrive in the US at some point that year. But the most recent step toward mobile payments from the company is something a bit different: LG Pay Quick. LG has recently applied to trademark the name in Europe, the US, and South Korea.

LG Pay reportedly launching in the US by June, will work on upcoming LG phones

According to an article yesterday published by Yonhap News Agency, LG is reportedly releasing its LG Pay service in the US by June. The report also claims that LG's upcoming G7 and V40 handsets will accompany the launch. For the unfamiliar, LG Pay service will enable users to make payments with supported LG devices on normal credit card readers, similar to the MST used by Samsung.

[Update: Removed] Broken LG Wallet/Pay app hits Play Store, is said to only work on nonexistent G7

Last year, LG made it clear that it intended to enter the mobile payments space, and in June it jumped in, releasing the service on its recent G6. At the time, it was called LG Pay. But just today, LG released—perhaps accidentally—a confusing new LG Wallet app to the Play store, and the app listing mentions the G7.

This app seems to have something of a split personality, with the listing and in-app header being named "LG Wallet," but with the app icon, boot animation, and a FAB in screenshots titled "LG Pay." Presumably, the two names are being used by LG interchangeably.

LG Pay launches in South Korea on the LG G6

Samsung launched a payment platform a few years back, and we should have known then it was only a matter of time before LG did the same. Indeed, LG announced several months ago that it was getting its own phone-based payment system. The predictably named LG Pay has launched, but only in South Korea for now.

LG Pay should go live in Korea in June, first supported device is the LG G6

Sometimes it's hard to defend LG and its "me-too" strategy of always trying to launch the exact same thing Samsung does, but several months or years later. This case is another example, although the details do appear a little encouraging in LG's favor.

The company has officially announced today that it made an agreement with Dynamics Inc., a US-based company that has developed a Wireless Magnetic Communication technology that's similar to Samsung's MST but with a different algorithm, to start using said tech in LG Pay. The service is supposed to launch in South Korea in June, with the first official phone being the G6 since it already has all the necessary hardware. A firmware update may bring LG Pay to other devices later in the year as well.
