The LG G5's Metal Frame May Actually Be Coated In Plastic [Update]

LG has said repeatedly that the LG G5 has a metal alloy body with cleverly hidden antennas. The company didn't really go into detail about how that was achieved, except to say the process is called micro-dizing. It seems that micro-dizing may have something to do with plastic because a teardown video from YouTuber JerryRigEverything reveals what appears to be a plastic coating on top of the metal frame.

LG G5 Review: A Bit Of A Mess, Frankly

LG is a company whose smartphone products have gone from bottom of the barrel to highly competitive in under four years. Once the butt of bad phone jokes in the early days of Android, the company has lifted itself up into prominence in particular with the G Series, the originator of that lineage being the Optimus G.

The original G was a model for the Nexus 4 - the glass front and back blended a fairly bold design with modern and high-end components. LG's software really wasn't quite there yet, but they quickly stepped up their game with the G2 in the following year, and in the eyes of many fans perfected that formula in the G3.

LG Hires Jason Statham To Sell The G5 And (Presumably) Punch Samsung Phones To Death In New Commercials

You've heard of Jason Statham, right? That generically rugged-looking guy who shows up in about 50% of the action B-movies in any given summer to sound British and punch people in the face? Well apparently the rugged-punching-British demographic is one that LG would like to win, because they've hired him to promote the G5 in an upcoming series of commercials. They said so in a press release. Yes, a press release for a commercial. Welcome to the 2016 mobile market.

LG G5 Available For Order On T-Mobile Starting Today With Spare Battery And 360 Cam For A Limited Time

AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have already graciously started taking your money for the new LG flagship, and now it's T-Mobile's turn. Online G5 orders are live on the uncarrier today, and it appears to be a standard "order" not a "pre-order." We're only a few days away from the April 1st release, so that's not surprising.

LG Makes A Surprisingly Big Deal Out Of Its UX 5.0 Software Skin Upgrade With A Video And Press Release

Years and years after Samsung, HTC, and Motorola started plopping bloated skins on top of stock Android, manufacturers are still trying to create semi-artificial market differentiation with their shiny software toys. While manufacturer skins have gotten more tolerable as of late (thanks in no small part to the way they've also become much more resource efficient), it's still vaguely annoying that all these companies feel the need to spend vast amounts of time and effort completely overhauling something that already works pretty well.

LG G5 Available For Pre-Order On Sprint And Verizon Starting Today, Released April 1st

No, it's not an April Fool prank, as far as we're aware. Sprint and Verizon are taking pre-orders for the LG G5 starting today, and it will be officially available on April 1st. You have your choice of monthly payments, a contract, or just buying it outright for $576 on Sprint. Verizon only has payment plans, and the full price phone is a little more expensive.

AT&T Has Started Accepting LG G5 Pre-Orders, Shipping At The End Of This Month

The LG G5 is coming. Judging from this weekend's poll, quite a few of you are dead set on buying this phone as soon as you get the chance. For those of you on AT&T, that time is now. The carrier has started accepting pre-orders for the phone, which will become available in stores starting April 1st.

[Deal Alert] Forget The LG G5, My Bargain-Loving Readers, You Can Buy A New Unlocked G4 For Just $289.99

The LG G5 has some cool stuff going on with it. It has those swappable battery packs that lend the phone new powers, a powerful processor, QC 3.0 with a USB Type C plug, dual rear cameras, and a host of funky accessories. The one thing it doesn't have is a compelling price tag (it's also dog-ugly IMO). I'll tell you what does have a great price though, the unlocked LG G4 that's on sale right now on eBay for a paltry $289.99. That's less than half the price of the G5 for those of you keeping score.

If value is the most important factor in your phone-buying decision, then it's hard to find many more enticing options than the G4.

[Weekend Poll] Are You Considering Purchasing An LG G5?

The LG G5 comes into 2016 the unabashed underdog to Samsung's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. While Samsung is refining its lineup - based on a largely successful reimagining in the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge+ of last year - with more practical benefits this time around (better camera, much better battery life), LG's smartphone identity seems more than a bit confused.

Last year's V10 was very successful with owners, especially those who didn't find what they wanted in the G4 (most people I've talked to with a V10 love it), but that phone doesn't quite ring as mainstream - it's a powerhouse of specifications and general capability.
