European LG V40 model now supported by LG's bootloader unlock tool

LG's official bootloader unlock tool makes the company seem developer-friendly on the surface, but very few phone variants actually get added to it. For instance, the last supported US-market variant on the rather short list was the LG G6, a phone that was announced nearly two years ago. LG has just added the V40 to the list, but unsurprisingly, only the European-market model is compatible with the tool.

LG's bootloader unlock tool now works on some international G7 and V30 models

Some smartphone manufacturers have their own bootloader unlock tools, and LG is one of them. It made its debut back in 2015 with the H815 G4, but it's since added plenty more phones to the roster. Two of the latest phones to join are the G7 and V30, though only the European models are currently supported.

LG Releases Its Long Promised Bootloader Unlock Tool, But It Currently Only Supports The G4 For The EU Open Market (H815)

Many moons ago, LG had promised the release of an official bootloader unlock tool for its G3, but the company didn't make good on its word. It seems that the plans were never forgotten though, because LG's Developer site got a new "Unlock Bootloader" page that does just that, except it's not for the G3 (yet).

While bootloader unlocking is quite easy on Nexus devices, almost all other Android phones and tablets suffer from tightly locked bootloaders that require a bit of tinkering to get access to. Both Sony and Motorola actively try to help developers achieve unlock (and there was a time when HTC did so too), but owners of other brands are usually left on their own - free to roam the forums and try to find a method that works, or to use Sunshine if it's compatible.
