Google Text-to-speech 3.11.12 improves voices and adds support for Ukrainian, Czech, Bangla, Khmer, more [APK Download]

Google TTS was updated to version 3.11 a few days ago, but the changelog was just posted after a minor bump to 3.11.12. It turns out that this one brings support for several new languages including Ukrainian, Czech, Bangla (native to India and Bangladesh), Khmer (aka Cambodian), Nepali, and Sinhala (native to Sri Lanka).

There are also improvements to voices as well as a new option to disable number processing so that numbers can be read as they are. You might want to flip that toggle if the numbers were being read in a way that confuses you.

Google TTS 3.9 Adds System-Wide Text Selection Integration And New Languages [APK Download]

Google's Text-to-Speech engine has seen many updates over the past months with new voices, more natural enunciation, and more. What it's getting in this latest version is more of a functional improvement. Oh and there are a few new languages thrown in too.

Version 3.9.6 of Google TTS isn't yet available on the Play Store. It was bundled in with Android N Developer Preview 3, but the extracted APK works well on Marshmallow too.

I love Update Wednesdays, and today we've already seen pretty decent updates to several Google apps. As you've already seen, Google Play Games was updated to v1.5, but the one I'm excited about the most is, without a doubt, Google TTS v3.0, which made a jump today from v2.4.

So, what's so cool about TTS 3.0?

High-quality voices

First and foremost, Text-to-Speech 3.0 adds support for high quality voices. Just how drastic the difference is in day-to-day usage in various apps remains to be seen, but as far as file sizes go, we're talking about a jump from 5-6MB to 200+MB.

[New App] Google Text-To-Speech Arrives In The Play Store, Paves Way For Future Updates, Fixes Awful Default Voices On Note 3 And Others

Text-to-speech engines read text aloud, saving users from having to read it themselves. Google's TTS offering comes pre-installed on numerous Android devices, and like much of the software previously shipped as part of Android, it's now ready to spread its wings in the Play Store. Here it's available to far more users, as it can now be installed on devices that don't come with the software pre-installed (pictured below -left). In contrast, on the Nexus 5, Google TTS is apparently already installed and unremovable (pictured below - right).


Some devices benefit from this more than others. Galaxy Note 3 users can install Google TTS as a replacement for the less than stellar option Samsung provides.
