Google's December 'feature drop' feels more like a 'feature drip,' patch still missing on many Pixel phones (Update: Cumulative update planned)

Google announced the Android December security patch with much fanfare, calling it the first quarterly "Pixel feature drop" that adds new system capabilities and app functions to all Android 10-equipped generations of Pixel phones. However, just like the company had issues with the November patch for the Pixel 4, it looks as though many Google phone owners still haven't received the December system update thus far. Even hitting the "check for update" button doesn't seem to help. This makes the feature drop feel more like a disjointed feature drip, with some parts of it dribbling out faster than others.

Pixel 4 December update adds official support for T-Mobile eSIM

The Pixel 2 was the first of Google's devices to support the eSIM standard, which allows you to switch carriers without inserting a physical SIM card. Now that the Pixel 4 is sold on all major carriers, more networks can be activated using eSIM — including T-Mobile.

Automatic Call Screen starts rolling out on Pixel 4 with an option to save audio from calls

Automatic call screening is one of the headliners of the December Pixel feature drop, and it has started to roll out to the first Pixel 4 units on the latest security patch level. Once it has arrived, it will automatically be deployed to deal with spam calls, and it can be activated for unknown, private, or possibly spoofed numbers, as well. The feature now also widely offers to save audio from any screened call in addition to the familiar transcript, just as we suspected from teardowns.

(Update: OTA coming to more devices) November security patch still hasn't rolled out to many Pixel 4 devices

The November Android security patch has been out for a week now, but it still isn't available for many unlocked Pixel 4 units. Affected owners report that their phones falsely state everything's up to date when checking for updates in Settings, even though this should force software onto your device right away these days. Savvy users trying to flash the OTA file manually are also interrupted by an error message.

There's a second, more objective reason for the lack of 4K 60fps video on the Pixel 4 (and Google could fix it)

A month ago, Google explained why it doesn't support 4K video recording at 60fps on its latest flagships (or any of its phones, for that matter): It said the majority of users stick with 1080p, so it'd rather focus on improving that mode and avoid large storage consumption by 4K 60fps videos. As it turns out now, there might be another reason related to the Pixel 4's Snapdragon 855 processor, which always pulls images from the two rear cameras at once.
