Summer is now in full swing, meaning for the next two months you can expect scorching temperatures and high energy bills as your fans and AC units struggle to keep you cool. Fortunately, there's a way you can beat the heat and the increase in electricity costs: get a smart thermostat. There are plenty of great options available, but the top pick in our guide to the best smart thermostats in 2023 is the Google Nest Learning Thermostat. Google’s cheapest Nest Thermostat now supports Matter, but the more expensive ones don't

Your Nest Thermostat will start to Matter in your smart home ecosystem

After numerous delays, Matter launched in November 2022. Since then, the list of Matter-compatible accessories has only grown by leaps and bounds. But there have been issues. Belkin gave up on the smart home standard a year after it announced an updated version of all its popular smart home accessories. Philips has also delayed bringing the standard to the Hue bridge without providing any reasoning. On the other hand, Google has gone all in on the protocol and added Matter compatibility to several of its smart speakers and displays in December 2022. And now, true to its words, the company is updating the Nest Thermostat with Matter support.

We've seen better prices before, but the Nest goes on sale so rarely that you'll want to grab it now

The Google Nest Thermostat is easily one of the best smart thermostats you can get right now and definitely our favorite of the bunch. It offers a ton of features to improve your quality of life around the house, including voice commands and auto-scheduling. Now that you can get it for $90, that's a $40 discount that you can put towards savings or any other smart home gadgets you're interested in. We saw the Nest Thermostat available for $80 back in January, but since this gadget rarely goes on sale, we'd be inclined to just buy it now rather than wait for months on end hoping a new sale comes along.

With Matter finally a reality, the smart home market is really starting to evolve. The ADT+ app is set to receive a major overhaul in February, with new functionality promising to better integrate all of your devices. The home security company announced this update at CES 2023, and the biggest changes involve some surprisingly thorough integrations with Google Nest cameras and thermostats.

Nest thermostats' energy saving feature costs Google $20 million in patent infringement case

Just a month after Nest speakers were found violating Sonos' IP

At the beginning of this year, Google was forced to change how Nest speakers work following a Trade Commission ruling that found it guilty of infringing on Sonos' patents. Just a month later, the company is at the receiving end of a patent infringement case related to Nest products again, though this time it has to do with the tech used in Nest thermostats. A West Texas jury has ordered Google to pay $20 million after finding it guilty of infringing on one of EcoFactor's patents.

The cheapest way to automate heating and cooling using Nest hardware

The 2020 Nest Thermostat is Google's budget solution for controlling heating and cooling in your home, but it was still rather expensive at its introductory price of $130. Amazon already undercut the $100 mark earlier this year when it sold the thermostat for $99, but if you missed that deal, you can now get it a tad cheaper. During Prime Day 2021, the Sand-colored Nest Thermostat only costs ($35 off), while other colors are available for $99 again. In our review, we've come to like the thermostat for its easy setup and the firm integration with the rest of your Google-powered smart home, robust scheduling and voice control options, and its reliability. Sure, you're not getting the same premium features and the great look and feel provided by the Nest Learning Thermostat, but it also runs you more than double the cost of its budget sibling.

Google's Nest brand has seen a resurgence in recent years, introducing hot new products like Nest Wifi and Nest Audio. But as cool as these gadgets are, Nest's intelligent thermostats are still some of its most recognized products to date. Our Managing Editor Ryan Whitwam has been using the latest Nest Thermostat for a little over a week, and he's ready to answer your questions.

The arrival of the smart home has made everything from switching off lights to turning on the coffee maker easier than ever, but there are some problems that take extra smarts to solve. For Nest smart thermostats, that extra help comes in the form of the company's Seasonal Savings program, a feature designed to helps to save on energy costs. Previously restricted to users with specific utility providers, it's now starting rolling out to all Nest thermostats.
