Google app v7.9 begins work on day planning feature called At A Glance, saving web pages and images for later, possible Lens interface called "Eyes," and more [APK Teardown]

Version 7.9 of the Google app began rolling out last night, but like so many other updates, this one doesn't appear to change much once it has been installed. However, it may be setting the stage for a number of things, both new and previously announced. A teardown of the APK brings to light some new features for at a glance visibility of travel information and storing search results and web pages for later use, plus a few follow-ups for topics we've seen before.

Today Google has announced the release of MobileNets, a series of TensorFlow vision models built for comparatively low-power, low-speed platforms like mobile devices. In a cross-post on both the Open Source and Research blogs, Google released details about the new visual recognition software. Now even more useful machine learning tools can operate natively on your phone’s hardware, in a fast and accurate way. And, future tools like Google Lens will be able to perform more functions locally, without as much need for mobile data, and without waiting.

Google Photos is also getting Google Lens integration

Google has announced at I/O that Google Photos will also be seeing Google Lens integration. Now we'll be able to get contextual information about the images we have previously taken as well, not just whatever we can snap right now. From looking up the details and name of that plant or piece of artwork you liked, to checking to see what that cool old building you saw was, now you can apply those same Google Lens tools to the past as well as the present.

Google announces Google Lens, what Google Goggles always should have been

Google Goggles has been basically dead since 2014. It had no updates for three years, and what little utility it brought was quickly replaced by other services, or merged into existing apps. Well, now Google has disclosed a worthy successor to the idea in the form of Google Lens. Just announced at I/O, the new system will provide contextual information about things visually, like flowers you take pictures of, or text you point your phone at. This is huge.
