There have been recent signs that the seemingly abandoned experimental wearable might be making a return in one form or another, more than 2 years after the Glass Explorer Program officially ended. The first was an update to the MyGlass app last month, after lying dormant for nearly 3 years. This was followed the next day by a mysterious firmware update making its way to any Glass Explorer Edition units still in use. After the rollout of XE12 in mid-December and the announcement that January would not bring an update, Glass Explorers have been anxiously awaiting the release of XE14, originally due in February. As it turns out, they were to be disappointed. In a posting to the private Glass Community forum late yesterday, Teresa Z explained that XE14 had missed its February deadline. The reason: it simply wasn't ready to be released. Unfortunately, no details were given with regard to the timeline for the next update.

There aren't exactly many Google Glass explorers out there, since Google has not put the $1,500 product on sale anywhere, but your chances of spotting a wearer in the wild is about to shoot up. The Glass team announced on Google+ today that over the next few weeks, all explorers will get to invite up to three friends to join the Glass Explorers program. They will still have to buy the glasses, mind you, but this means the device will soon be more accessible than it has ever been.
