The XDA forums are the capitol of all Android root/ROM development efforts these days, and from its multitudes of developers and endless pages of posts come most of the homebrew software that provides us with root access, liberates draconian device restrictions, and keeps older phones ticking. Android enthusiasts aren't the only ones making use of the software there, though. Turkish OEM General Mobile recently rolled out its own Android Q beta program for two of its phones even though it isn't among the manufacturers Google lists as participating in these early Q tests.
Android One hasn't had the impact I think Google wanted, but these phones are still a popular budget option in many markets. Consumers in Turkey are about to get a new Android One option that could be quite a step up. The General Mobile GM6 includes a few niceties that many past budget phones have lacked like a fingerprint sensor and a selfie flash.
Android One is Google's initiative to get stock Android into the hands of more users, particularly (though not exclusively) the ones in developing markets. This usually means that devices which are part of the program are very inexpensive — with prices reaching as low as under $100 — and with specs that about match up to those price points. However, Android One devices have something that even most $500+ phones don't: fast and reliable OS updates straight from Google. (The Wall Street Journal reported back in November that this may eventually change, but we've yet so see any evidence of that, and the WSJ doesn't have a perfect track record either.)
Android One is on its way to Turkey. Today Google announced that it is partnering with General Mobile to bring out a faux-leather phone packed with stock Android and better specs than you would expect from Google's effort to grace the world with decent low-cost devices.
The General Mobile handset eschews low-res screens for a more impressive 5-inch HD display. Rather than a Mediatek processor, on the inside there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410. It's supplemented by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.
For taking pictures, there's 5MP shooter on the front and a sizable 13MP one on the back. The phone will come with support for LTE.
