Z-Fold-4-vs-Z-fold-3-hero

Foldables are the exciting new form factor that many people are excited about. When you look at Samsung's foldables, it's impressive to see how stable the company has made this particular product category within only four generations. On paper, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 doesn't seem like much of an upgrade over the Z Fold 3, but the differences may be more significant in person. A spec sheet only tells half a story, so let's dig deeper and explore how each phone compares.

Back in 2021, when the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was released, it was easily one of the best smartphones on the market, especially thanks to the improvements it delivered on the foldable screen. When we reviewed the Galaxy Z Fold 3, we rated it with a 9/10 and found it to be a fabulous phone for power users who want to get the most out of their devices.

Samsung recently boasted about its speedy Android 13 rollout and made it clear that it has no intention of slowing down. Continuing that momentum, the company has started rolling out the stable One UI 5-based Android 13 update for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3, and the original 5G Flip in Europe. With this firmware drop, the Korean giant has updated its entire premium and flagship Galaxy S, Note, and Fold lineup from 2021 and 2022 to the latest version of Android.

Z Fold3 bump (2)
I love the hell out of my Galaxy Z Fold3, and Prime Day knocks $710 off its price

For the right person, today's deal is worth taking advantage of

One of the best benefits of reviewing all the different smartphones is having the context to choose exactly what I want when I buy one for myself. Last year, my big purchase was the Galaxy Z Fold3, which marked a big change in attitude for a one-time folding phone critic. But after reviewing the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Galaxy Z Flip3, I knew I had to have one. Even at $1,800 for the base model, I don't regret my purchase one bit. But right now, you can get one for over $700 less as part of the Amazon Prime Day festivities. I know that's still a lot of money, and not everyone can afford it. But if you've been tempted by the idea, I urge you to consider it.

Samsung has gained favor among smartphone photographers with the addition of the Expert RAW app to its Galaxy S21 Ultra, introducing some advanced features that exceed the capabilities of Pro Mode in the standard Camera app. While the Galaxy S22 announcement confirmed every model in the lineup would receive the app at launch, a Samsung forum moderator revealed Expert RAW would be supported on more devices. Just as the S22 is shipping to customers, Samsung has formalized the list of phones and dates they’ll receive official support for the latest Expert RAW app.

Samsung's older foldables are now getting One UI 4

The Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip are next in line for some Android 12 love

Samsung got started with its foldable phone lineup in 2019, with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, after showing off its folding display tech for a few years prior. Since then, these phones have significantly matured in terms of durability and features, to the point a foldable phone is now an option average folks can consider. Of course, being among its most expensive phones, they're high on Samsung's list for the ongoing One UI 4 rollout. After its newest foldables began receiving their respective Android 12 updates, the older ones are now next in line.

Samsung Music adds proper support for big, foldable screens

All ready for that totally affordable Fold3 you were planning to buy

Samsung Music is your default music app on Samsung phones, and as such software goes, it's pretty good — it comes with Spotify integration, plays various music files, sorts them by categories, and integrates with many Samsung smart devices. If all you want is play your offline music library, then it does the job, and does it well. The latest update to Samsung Music improves support for a specific form factor — one that should have been supported for a long time.

With lots of smartphones in 2021 now shipping with hole-punch front cameras, the Energy Ring app has become one of the coolest tweaks you can add to your handset. In case you're not familiar with it, it's made by developer IJP, and it allows you to display your phone's current battery level as a ring around your camera, instead of putting that space to waste. Earlier this year, it was made into a universal app (previously, every supported phone got its own individual app) with support for multiple devices like the Galaxy S21 and the Google Pixel 5. Now the app is getting support for a handful of new devices.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold3 is exactly as impossible to repair as you'd expect

Teardown reveals a whole lot of stuff going on inside

The Galaxy Z Fold3 is Samsung's latest shot at making a foldable smartphone and depending on who you ask, it's the best one to date. Not only is it equipped with the speedy Snapdragon 888 CPU, but you also get tangible improvements over its predecessor, like S Pen support and an under-screen front camera in the folding 7.6-inch display. We're really liking it so far. But of course, all of this comes at a cost: Galaxy foldables consistently come off as really hard to repair, and the Z Fold3 will be no exception, if this teardown is anything to go by.

Samsung has plenty of new gadgets on the horizon, and nearly all of them have leaked out. From the Galaxy Z Flip3 and S Pen-equipped Z Fold3 to the hotly-anticipated Galaxy Watch4 series, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from the fall lineup. All that's been missing is when we'll actually see the launch for all these new devices, but a new report is finally filling in those details.

New, dodgy Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 leaks give us panda Pixel vibes

A bigger secondary display seems like a good move, but check out these camera bumps

A handful of renders and what is claimed to be a promotional video for Samsung's upcoming foldables have been circulating today, ostensibly showing off the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3. While we remain a little skeptical and cannot corroborate the details with our own sources, a handful of known leakers are convinced, and a few key details do jibe with what we would expect. Still, some design details are a little unusual, so take the news with an appropriate (if not massive) dose of salt.
