Samsung #YouMake is Moto Maker for your smart home

It's a central hub to customize all of the company's Bespoke products

Who doesn't love being able to add a little customization to what they're buying? Late last year, Samsung made an attempt to fill the Moto Maker-sized hole in our hearts with the launch of the Bespoke Edition of its Galaxy Z Flip3 foldable. Shoppers could pick from a selection of colors to create a custom combination for the back panel that best suited their personality. Samsung's been expanding those efforts, roping in product categories like smartwatches and even its appliances. This week the company reveals its full campaign aimed at helping promote all these customization options.

Samsung's been offering some solid year-end deals this week, including $250 off a Galaxy Z Fold3 bundle on Monday. Today, it's got a similar deal going for the customizable Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition: you get $150 off the phone itself — that brings the price down to $950 — plus a free pair of Galaxy Buds2.

Samsung is wrong about pockets. Plain wrong. Its Australian division has teamed up with Swedish brand Dr. Denim for some "Limited Edition" jeans for the tech conglomerate's compact, foldable Galaxy Z Flip3. And they are wrong. About. Pockets.

One UI is my favorite flavor of Android, but there's one small thing about it that's always annoyed me: you can't set your wallpaper from the Google Photos app. Whenever you chose the "set as" option in the menu, you could only set the photo as a contacts profile pic or as your lockscreen wallpaper. Thankfully, that's changing in One UI 4.

The latest Android release is finally available for Samsung's latest foldables

The Galaxy Z Flip3 and the Galaxy Z Fold3 are the most recent flagship foldable phones from Samsung, and with many generational improvements in tow, they're also considered by some to be the company's first foldables that are truly worth their salt. If you own one, you've probably looked at our coverage on Android 12 and wondered when the update will land on your phone. Now, the forecast is a little bit clearer, as Samsung has released the first beta builds of its Android 12-based One UI 4 to both foldable smartphones, so you can stop being jealous of Pixel users and their quick (well, relatively quick) updates.

Samsung got an early start on delivering October's security patch internationally, delivering it to users before September had even drawn to a close. As usual, US-based devices are following about a week behind — not too shabby, considering Pixel owners only just got the update on Monday. As October carries on, more Samsung phones are receiving their stateside updates.

For all our complaining about smartphone manufacturers keeping the fun colors to entry-level phones — I’m looking at you, Google — gadgets feel a lot more fun than they did a decade ago. Sure, you can still opt for a slab of black glass and metal, but with blues, greens, yellows, and more available for purchase, why not add some radiance back into your life. With Samsung’s latest addition to the Galaxy Z lineup, it’s taking things one step further — complete color customization for its latest foldable.

Foldables are still a relatively new form factor for phones. Samsung’s Galaxy Z lineup might be on its third generation, but the rest of the competition — what little exists, anyway — is still in its earliest days. One of the best selling points for the Galaxy Z Flip3 is its already affordable price, but if you’ve been waiting for a sale, today’s your lucky day. You can snatch up Samsung’s latest clamshell phone for just $850 at Amazon.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 review: The first foldable worth buying

...if you can accept the middling battery life

The Z Flip3 is tantalizingly close to being everything I hoped it would be. Starting now, folding phones aren't just for early adopters. You can go out and order one right now, and you probably won't be unhappy with it — or pay through the nose for it. I still have some complaints when it comes to things like middling-to-poor battery life, and part of me wishes Samsung would just take a stance to either cut more corners or fewer, but we're basically "here." The Z Flip3 is liminal, and in five years, we'll look back on it as marking the beginning of the true folding phone era.

With the onset of the foldable smartphone and all of the screens it can pack onto so much surface space, Google feels the need to highlight what owners of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip3 and Fold3 can do with its services.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 are the best foldable phones on the market and some of the most exciting mobile devices in recent memory. One of the big improvements made this year is durability, with both phones featuring an IPX8 water resistance rating for the first time. Now Samsung's sharing some of the testing that's gone into assuring its hardware holds up to our abuse, while also offering a peek into sales performance.

Samsung's latest foldables are getting the September 2021 security patch internationally

The September patch is also available for a plethora of phones and tablets including the S21 series

Samsung is staying true to tradition this week as it releases the September 2021 security patch before any other company, in some cases before August had even finished. This update includes a new version of One UI for the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G, bringing features from the new Z Flip3 to the older devices internationally.

"Wow! Is that a flipping phone?!" is one of the many exclamations I have heard whenever I've used my Galaxy Z Flip3 in public — “Is that an Apple?” was also one of them. It's quite a marvel, almost too good to be true, and it really is a commendable attempt from Samsung at democratizing the foldable form factor. I had to try one for myself, and it was only when I did that I realized it might not be as practical as it seems.

Been caught gawking at a Galaxy Z Flip3? Don't want to buy it through your carrier? Not even through Best Buy? Samsung? Maybe you've got Amazon gift cards and credit card points burning a hole in your wallet? Well, U.S. Flip3 units are available from the site right now and at a modest, but nice discount, too.The Flip3 has gotten good reviews all around and has become the most accessible folding smartphone we've had to date. There have been good deals for the device at the carriers and at certain stores, but maybe you're not in the mood to commit to sticking around for 2 years or trading in your old phone? Well, it's generally been tough going outside of those promos, going MSRP or bust. And for what? Shipping times as long as 6 weeks? Forget it!

Apple's convinced me: reports of the death of small phones have been greatly exaggerated

The iPhone 13 Mini and Galaxy Z Flip3 are proof that there's still a market for small phones

Over the past months, I haven't been shy about expressing my appreciation for the Pixel 5's physical dimensions. After years of carrying larger and larger phones, which culminated with the Pixel 4 XL, it felt great to go back to a smaller device that just fits in my hands and my tiny female pants' pockets, and where I don't have to stretch my thumb like Mrs. Incredible to reach the opposite top corner. However, for a brief moment, it looked like we were starting to dig the grave to bury the idea of smaller phones, but there's a new wind blowing and it breathed new life into the category. We're now seeing both the death of small phones and their rebirth at the same time.

Some much-needed competition in the foldable phone space has been officially waylaid for now. TCL's Project Chicago, a clamshell-styled would-be competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip3, is on indefinite hold from release.

Samsung is slowing down updates for the Galaxy Note9

Plus its latest foldables join the monthly patch list

Despite its wide array of devices, Samsung has some of the best software support you'll find on Android phones today. That's not to say phone development doesn't eventually slow down, of course. Three years after its initial launch, the Galaxy Note9 will no longer get monthly security patches, though it hasn't lost support just yet.

Buried within Samsung's latest Galaxy Unpacked event was some big news: WhatsApp was finally making it possible to jump from iOS to Android with all of your messages in tact. If your message library has been holding you back from switching phones, this is an exciting announcement, but you'll need to be moving to a Samsung phone to do it.

Samsung's big pitch for the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 appears to have landed a hit. The company has confirmed that it has logged the most global pre-orders for the new foldable phones ever, eclipsing sales of existing Galaxy Z models year-to-date. Unofficial numbers from South Korea may give us an idea of how big this stack actually is.
