Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 vs. Watch 4 Classic: Bargain time

They may not be the newest Samsung smartwatches, but with the right sale, they're certainly the best bang for your buck.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic may be the latest and greatest Galaxy smartwatches, but beyond some small hardware upgrades, the core functions and features of the newest and oldest Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watches are nearly identical. The newer watches are a little faster and last a little longer — okay, a fair amount longer — but they have 85% of the same features. Only now, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic can frequently be found for half the price or less.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic review: Even better with time

Now with 100 percent more Google Assistant

Released in Summer 2021, the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic are the first watches to run the revamped Wear OS 3. After a slightly shaky release window, Samsung’s made good on its promises to add once-missing features like the Google Assistant through updates. Nearly a year after launch, I’m still regularly using the thing — and thanks in part to Samsung keeping its word, I still love it.

When will this long-awaited update finally arrive?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is the best Android smartwatch we've seen, and it looks like it's getting even better: Google Assistant support is confirmed to be arriving for the Galaxy Watch4 soon. While the Watch4 already has voice assistant support through Samsung's own Bixby, users have been quite vocal about their desire for Google's alternative. We still don't know for sure exactly when it will land, but Google Assistant is already taking center stage in a new Galaxy Watch4 ad posted to Samsung's Spanish YouTube channel.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic lineups have single-handedly rejuvenated Google's Wear OS platform and have made owning an Android-adjacent smartwatch in 2022 a worthwhile exercise. Let's make that exercise cost a little less, shall we?

Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic are among the best smartwatches you can buy right now. We gave them both glowing reviews, but we do have some issues with them. Today, Samsung's announcing an update that... actually doesn't address those issues, but includes a few new fitness tricks and a promise to get the Google Assistant up and running in the near future.

Why I bought the Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch over the Samsung Galaxy Watch4

Hint: It's not because it comes without Wear OS 3, at least for now

When Motorola announced the first generation Moto 360 in 2014, I was pretty excited about its design, mostly because it actually didn't look like a smartwatch, but somewhat resembled a true timepiece. It took me a while to buy a smartwatch, though, and I waited until 2017 to finally purchase a Fossil Q Explorist. Back then, it was one of the nicest-looking smartwatches around, precisely because it felt like an actual watch. Sadly, the latter died on me in July 2020, and I waited more than a year to replace it.

By all accounts, Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 Classic is one of the best wearables ever made for Android devices. Thanks to Wear OS 3, its gorgeous hardware finally has competent software to match, complete with every app and service offered on the Play Store. It costs a pretty penny, but if you're looking for an even more premium experience, Samsung has you covered.

Along with 'improved system stability and reliability'

The new Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watch4 comes in two versions: the Classic, with a physical rotating bezel for easily navigating menus, and the non-Classic, which does the same thing with a touch-sensitive edge on its round screen. Samsung's latest software update addresses the latter, as some users were complaining of scrolling issues. It's available to download right now.

YouTube Music arrives for Wear OS smartwatches, but not yours

Right now it only supports the new Galaxy Watch4

For a second there, it looked like Google was just about done with Wear OS. That was until the roadmap started unfolding with plans for, among other things, a new YouTube Music app and, later on, the big reveal of new Samsung smartwatches running the platform. Today, the plot has finally culminated with the soft launch of the new YouTube Music for the Galaxy Watch4 series.

Surprise? After teases and leaks (and some more leaks), Samsung finally confirmed its newest wearables today: the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic. They're both the first smartwatches to come out of Google's partnership with Samsung to make Wear OS suck less and the first devices to use Samsung's new W920 chip. These watches have a lot to prove.

With today's introduction of the Galaxy Watch4, we're getting our first in-depth look at exactly what Google and Samsung have been working on together. While the initial announcement at I/O in May was exciting, finally getting a glimpse of Wear OS 3 in action feels like a breath of fresh air compared to its current state. With Samsung's latest wearables shipping in just a couple of weeks, the future of Android smartwatches is finally here, and there are plenty of reasons to get excited.

Samsung’s second mega launch event for 2021 is happening later this month, likely bringing you two new foldables and a few accessories, including the abundantly leaked Galaxy Watch4 series. We already know that the two smartwatches will be the first to use the new Wear OS. But these new leaks go a step further, detailing their specifications while also showing us how the Classic variant (the one with the rotating bezel) is going to look in real life.

The future of Android's smartwatch platform might very well hinge on the success or failure of the Galaxy Watch4, the first known model to use the new Samsung-infused version of Wear OS. So it's no surprise that fans of both Wear and Samsung's watch hardware are eager for any glimpse of the new gadgets. The latest one comes courtesy of mega-retailer Amazon, which posted surprisingly candid shots of the upcoming watches on its Canadian site.
