Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 vs. Tile Pro: Which is the best Android tracker?

Can Samsung compete with the original worldwide Bluetooth tracker network?

The Apple AirTag gets a lot of attention, but the first Samsung SmartTag came months before it, and the original Tile years earlier. These immensely handy Bluetooth trackers all do basically the same thing, using a combination of Bluetooth technology to inform you where you misplaced items nearby and a worldwide network of connected users to help you find items that are far away. Samsung's latest Bluetooth tracker includes some nifty features that some users will love, but the Tile leverages a wider network to appeal to users, despite being slightly less advanced.

A few months before Apple released the Airtag, Samsung entered the Bluetooth tracker market with the Galaxy SmartTag. It had a robust feature set overall but lacked Ultra-wideband (UWB) support unless you paid extra for the SmartTag+, and the battery life wasn't fantastic. Now, Samsung has refreshed the device with the SmartTag 2 with a plethora of improvements. But has Samsung improved it enough to warrant upgrading?

The Samsung SmartTag 2 offers a new generation of GPS tracking for the valuables we tend to lose the most. On top of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra wide-band (UWB) support for real-time location tracking with pinpoint accuracy, the SmartTag 2 is powered by a CR2032 battery. Those are the small circular cells we always mistake as loose change when we come across them in our junk drawers.

The Samsung SmartTag 2 is one of the best ways to keep tabs on the go-to items in your life that have a nasty habit of disappearing. We're talking about car keys, wallets, laptop sleeves, and other things we take for granted until they vanish into thin air.

We've all been there — a misplaced wallet, those car keys that never seem to make it to the key hook, a lost phone, or a wandering pet. Bluetooth trackers, like Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag 2, help ensure you won't stray too far from your valuables. And with each iteration comes improvements. With this latest model, Samsung opted to boost the SmartTag 2's resistance to the elements, including water.

Samsung's next-gen smart tracker is confirmed to include a big upgrade

Despite not making much noise in the marketplace, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a nifty accessory for people who want a smart tracker built to work with the SmartThings ecosystem and Galaxy devices. In addition to letting you track your missing devices, the Galaxy SmartTag can also control select smart appliances. Previous reporting has pointed towards a second-generation model of the Galaxy SmartTag arriving in the third quarter of the year, and we're now encountering more info that confirms one of its hardware attributes.

Samsung launched the Galaxy SmartTags in early 2021 alongside the Galaxy S21 series, months ahead of the debut of Apple's tracking tag. Like most first-generation Samsung products though, SmartTag showed promise but was led down by poor execution. On the other hand, Apple's AirTags became a huge hit. Despite the original SmartTag not doing so well, Samsung has not given up on the product. A recent rumor claimed the company could launch the second-gen SmartTags in Q3 2023. A new report now sheds more light on what improvements the tracker could pack.

Any tech company would be lying if it told you it didn't take inspiration from the competition. The cycle of innovation in mobile starts with Samsung some years, Apple on others, and sometimes even Google or Microsoft come up with a fresh idea — but one company can't just let another keep a leg up, so they release their own version of the feature, and it ends up seeming like everybody is just copying off of their neighbor's paper.

And can anyone help me find my keys?

I have an admission to make. Since my college days, one of my worst habits has been constantly misplacing my keys and my wallet. It's not that I leave them in places where they could get stolen, but instead, I'm always forgetting to grab them when I head out of the house. Thankfully, Buffalo's cold, harsh winters allow me to leave my car keys and wallet in my coat pocket, while a smart lock has made worrying about house keys a thing of the past.

Samsung has spent the better part of a decade building out an entire ecosystem for its products, and overall, it’s mostly succeeded. While it can be frustrating to use a Galaxy-branded accessory with a Pixel or a OnePlus device — and even more maddening when said accessory is the only one of its kind — it does have its benefits for fans of the company’s hardware. Right now, you can score a pair of Galaxy Buds2 for just $130, with a free SmartTag thrown in for good measure.

Ultra-wideband support is a hot ticket in the phone world right now. The latest models from both Apple and Samsung support it, allowing them to work with branded tracking devices (the new AirTag and Galaxy SmartTag+, respectively) that can show you where a lost item is with augmented reality, among other things. According to a trusted source, that capability may make its way into future Google hardware.

Samsung's SmartTags are getting smarter as Apple's AirTags launch

Some peace of mind for when you're headed home

The tracker market is really starting to heat up. Apple finally unveiled its AirTags yesterday, but if you're the owner of a Samsung smartphone, you have another option for keeping lost items in check. SmartTags have been around since January, offering an alternative to Tile for anyone in the Galaxy ecosystem. While Apple held its event, Samsung took the opportunity to highlight some new features for its own trackers, including Unknown Tag Search and voice command support.Starting next week, you can use your phone to scan the nearby area for tags that don't belong to you. Samsung is positioning this as a security measure, giving peace of mind that no one has placed a tag in your backpack to track you home. It's sort of similar to Apple's lost AirTag function, which supports NFC to read a found tracker. However, unlike that feature, this isn't intended as a way to return a tag to its rightful owner — it's to ensure you aren't being followed.SmartTags are designed to work exclusively within Samsung's ecosystem, so Bixby support arrives next week for hands-free searching. Asking Bixby to find a tracker automatically shares its location with you. While Google Assistant would be a nice inclusion to have, you shouldn't hold your breath. If you've been waiting for voice commands to come to SmartTags, this is likely the best you're going to get.[EMBED_YT]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNRFA1kvDcg[/EMBED_YT]Samsung also used yesterday's Apple event as an opportunity to show off its new AR tracking mode for the SmartTag+. Its UWB-equipped gadget has been available for purchase since last week, complete with support for displaying the location of lost items using augmented reality. Whether or not SmartTags will succeed in a post-AirTags world remains to be seen, but it's good to see Samsung continuing to add features to its trackers.

You still need a Galaxy phone to use them, though

Samsung announced the Galaxy SmartTag back in January, alongside its Galaxy S21 series of phones. A direct competitor to Tile, SmartTags are designed to help you keep track of keys, wallets, and anything else that has a habit of disappearing on its own. Although the standard SmartTags have been on sale for a little over two months now, the enhanced Tag+ model lagged behind a bit. Samsung has now announced retail availability: April 16th.

When Samsung launched the Galaxy SmartTags alongside the S21 series, the company teased that they could be used for home automation via the SmartThings app. Now that the S21 and the SmartTags are arriving at people's doorsteps, it becomes clear how exactly this automation works. Our own Max Weinbach went hands-on with the tags' smart home routine capabilities.

Samsung hasn't only announced the S21 series and the Galaxy Buds Pro at Unpacked today, it also took the time to introduce the Galaxy SmartTag. It's a concept that should feel familiar if you've ever heard of Tile. Like the products from the hugely successful competitor, the Galaxy SmartTag will help you find misplaced items via Bluetooth Low Energy. It also has a button that lets you activate a pre-defined smart home routine. It's controlled via the new SmartThings Find service.
