Why I left Pixels behind and found a new home with Samsung

For several years I was a hardcore Google fan, turning my nose up at anything other than Nexus or Pixel devices. Last year, I traded in my Pixel 3XL for a Galaxy S10+, and I could not be happier. I switched because, after years of constant issues, I wanted to try something new. Now that I've made the jump and had time to reflect on it, I'd like to discuss what is keeping me with Samsung for the foreseeable future, as well as what I miss from the pure experience Pixels have to offer.

The Galaxy S20 series is finally available, but given the $1,000 price for just the base model, it's certainly not a good choice for everyone. The only devices that have been able to use it are Google's own Pixel devices (plus the Nexus 5X and 6P), but that finally appears to be changing.

This year's Galaxy flagship smartphones are more expensive than ever. If you can't quite stomach the increased price tags, there is some good news: the Galaxy S10 series isn't going anywhere. Similar to what Apple has been doing for years, the previous models will continue being manufactured, and will be sold at lower prices.

Opinion: Samsung is fast becoming the Android update king

Until recently, the words "Samsung" and "timely updates" were never uttered in the same sentence, unless you were emphasizing the contradiction between them. The Korean behemoth had a reliable, albeit very leisurely update schedule, pushing Android users who valued prompt access to security patches and new features away. With Android 10, things changed drastically, and Samsung has been impressing us more and more, with both major OTA rollouts and monthly security patches. Whether it's due to a different strategy, new team or leadership, Android's Project Treble, or some magical potion, Samsung is quickly becoming the OEM to beat for Android updates and we can't help but applaud its recent efforts.

Android 10 rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S10 series (Update: T-Mobile 5G variant)

Samsung has been testing Android 10 on its Galaxy S10 series extensively, with one beta update chasing the other over the last few weeks. The company is apparently finally satisfied with the software, as it has just started rolling out the stable release with version 2.0 of One UI in tow. It looks like it's only coming to some people in Germany, but it can't take too long until it arrives at more customers.
