Tap-to-pay issues with Google Pay appear to be affecting phones from Google, OnePlus, and others

Tap-to-pay issues with Google Pay appear to be affecting phones from Google, OnePlus, and others

Paying via NFC with Google Pay is more convenient, safe, and hygienic than swiping a payment card through a seldomly cleaned payment terminal. These days, almost every flagship phone includes the NFC interface required for Google Pay to function. But that doesn't guarantee that tap-to-pay will actually work. Recently, issues have popped up on the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and the Pixel 5 — but it looks like this problem might be much more far reaching.

T-Mobile's Galaxy S10 and AT&T's Note10 series pick up October patches

Samsung kicked off this month's security patch rollout last week with the budget Galaxy A50. Within days of that release, some of its recent S Pen-clad flagships are also being bumped to the latest Android security level. Alongside their international variants, the US Note20 and Note10 series have started getting the October update, starting with the unlocked models.

Google Pay is mysteriously not working on some Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra handsets

Google Pay is mysteriously not working on some Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra handsets

Samsung Pay is a big perk of ownership for Samsung's phones. The MST-based system on most of the company's phones works with plenty of card readers that don't actually support contactless payments, and that's especially handy these days. There's not a whole lot of reason to give it up, but if you do want or need to switch to Google Pay and you're using a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, you might run into some trouble.

Samsung extends One UI 3 beta to Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra owners

Now that Android 11 is out, the race has begun to see which OEMs can be the fastest to push the new software to older phones. Samsung started rolling out its Android 11-based One UI 3 beta earlier this month, and now the program is expanding to include Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra owners — but only on certain networks in the US.

Google Fi welcomes Samsung Galaxy phones to its lineup with up to $300 in credits

Google Fi welcomes Samsung Galaxy phones to its lineup with up to $300 in credits

Google Fi and its customers have nominal access to T-Mobile's 5G network, but frankly speaking, the number of Fi subscribers who have brought their compliant devices onto the network probably doesn't amount to a hill of beans. So, the virtual carrier is taking things into its own hands by selling six of Samsung's 5G phones direct to buyers.

Note20 Ultra owners experience screen burn-in with official Samsung case

Note20 Ultra owners experience screen burn-in with official Samsung case

Samsung released the Note20 Ultra earlier this summer, and by almost all accounts, it's a great phone. Not everything is hunky-dory in Note20 land, however. One of the many neat case options for Note20 Ultra is Samsung's S-View Flip Cover, which allows for quick access to common functions without opening the cover and viewing the entire phone screen. While it sounds good in theory, it seems like the accessory might be causing more damage than it's worth.

Camera shootout: Galaxy Note20 Ultra vs. Pixel 4a

Camera shootout: Galaxy Note20 Ultra vs. Pixel 4a

The Google Pixel 4a and Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra launched within a few weeks of each other, but they could not be more different Android phones. The Note20 Ultra is a humongous beast of a phone with all the latest and greatest hardware and an unsurprising $1,300 price tag. The Pixel 4a is smaller, less powerful, and only costs $350. And yet, Google's camera processing is so good that it can clobber phones that cost several times more. Is the Note20 Ultra one of them? Well, it depends on what you want out of a phone camera, but there is not a $1,000 gap in photo quality here.
