At 11:50 PM local time on Thursday (4:50 AM GMT), an 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mexico, near its border with Guatemala and Belize. The tremors were felt in Mexico City, hundreds of miles away from the epicenter, and caused extensive damage in the southern cities of Juchitán, Oaxaca, Chiapas. In response to this disaster, several US carriers are making calls and texts free to Mexico.

AT&T, Sprint, and Virgin Mobile are waiving fees for calls and SMS to the UK in response to Manchester attack

In the wake of the horrific concert bombing in Manchester, AT&T is offering free calls to the area and will credit any calls or SMS messages made to England from the 22nd to 24th. Virgin Media is making all calls to Manchester landlines in the 0161 prefix area free. Virgin Mobile in the US is also waiving fees, as is Sprint. No word yet from T-Mobile or Verizon, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them do the same soon.

I wish I didn't have to sit here and write these kinds of posts. I wish we weren't living in times where companies are compelled to offer free calls to countries following tragedies like these (instead of celebrations or national holidays or happy events), especially when they're conducted by fellow man and not inevitable fits of nature. But here we are, mourning another terrorist attack that has taken the lives of 36 persons and injured over 140 in Turkey's Ataturk Airport in Istanbul.

T-Mobile, AT&T, And Sprint Offer Free Calls And Texts To Ecuador Following Deadly Earthquake

US carriers offering free service to disaster-stricken areas of the world has become something of a grim but inspiring tradition at this point. After a devastating earthquake struck the area off the coast of Esmeraldas, Ecuador last night, all of Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile have announced that they are offering free calls and texts to the country for the time being. This allows US residents to contact family members and friends in the affected areas. The offer extends to any calls or texts made from yesterday through Sunday, April 24th on Sprint, Saturday the 23rd on T-Mobile, and Friday the 22nd on AT&T.
