Most of us have seen the ridiculous, pseudoscientific paranoia being spread about 5G, with charlatans alternately claiming it will cook you from the inside out, that it kills birds, that it's all means to control the weather, or that it's all a part of an elaborate, "deep state" conspiracy for... faster data? Well, it turns out, there may be at least one unanticipated, unintuitive side effect that mmWave 5G can have: it could mess up the accuracy of weather forecasts. Read More
We've been able to ask Google Assistant for information about the local weather for a long time, and your Chromecast's home screen has shown the current temperature along with a weather icon. But if you wanted to check out your upcoming weather, the only option was to "OK Google" yourself a forecast while you sit and listen through it. Back at I/O, Google announced upcoming contextual visual responses for the Google Home/Assistant and Chromecast, and now at least one of the features they showed off is here. You can now ask your Google Home to show you the weather on your Chromecast. Read More
While probing the v7.1 update for the Google app, Cody discovered an image of a flower titled ic_pollen_count.png. It was pretty clear that Google was planning to implement some sort of pollen forecast in search at some point, and now it's been made official. Read More
As Oculus and Samsung continue to look for more partners to develop Gear VR apps, apparently they thought a virtual reality weather app would be compelling. Or maybe this was actually AccuWeather's idea. Either way, AccuWeather has published an app for the Gear VR, titled 'Weather for Life.' Read More
Weather apps. If one app category gets its own entire section in the Play Store, you should surmise that the choices are beyond wide and the selection is almost impossible. Even browsing the category is a daunting minefield of Froyo-stuck designs and mediocre data and options. So why bother with a third-party weather client, especially when Google Now has its own weather card, Android comes with a News & Weather app, and a simple Google search for the name of your city with the word weather turns up the result you're looking for?
Details for one. Weather apps can provide a breadth of information that Google's knowledge graph and cards don't have. Read More
AccuWeather is one of the leading apps for getting more information than you could ever possibly need about the position of the sun, clouds, and the statistical likelihood that precipitation will fall from the sky. It has not, however, been the leader in Holo interfaces among weather apps (the Weather Channel beat it to the punch last week). Today, it catches up, though, with a brand spanking new UI.
It's not just menu bars and Roboto that are being added for this interface overhaul. The company has also improved the widgets, allowing them to be resizable. Which, you know, all widgets should be. Read More
If you've ever been on your way out the door while trying to decipher a delayed weather radar map, this is your lucky day. Already a notable app for iOS users, Sky Motion has arrived on Android to make sure you always know when inclement weather is on the way.
This is not a full-featured weather app, and it's not supposed to be. Sky Motion specializes in hyper-local geolocation weather reports. By using a combination of GPS, radar maps, motion tracking, and prediction algorithms, Sky Motion tells you exactly when it's going to rain. It's not just rain, though. Sky Motion can clue you into approaching snow, freezing rain, hail, and sleet as well. Read More
Now here's a novel idea! Putting weather information on the television! Weather Underground is now available for the Google TV, bringing a rather nice, simple weather app to the Google TV. The app features a 6-day forecast, hourly forecasts, and maps of your local area with weather information overlaid. It's pretty nifty.
It may not be the most exciting app, but this is the way it should be, shouldn't it? Gone are the days of turning to a static channel and waiting around for a man in a suit to eventually get around to talking about your area. Just pop open the app and see. Read More
Weather Underground, a popular (and extremely useful) online weather service, released its official app to the Android Market yesterday, bringing sophisticated, reliable weather reporting to the palm of your hand.
Perhaps the most handy of Weather Underground's features is the Interactive Wundermap, which allows users to get vital weather information in various forms, from webcam to satellite overlays to radar animations.
WUnderground's app also includes up-to-the-minute local conditions from weather stations near you, reporting temperatures, "feels like" temperatures, hourly forecasts, interactive maps, 7-day forecasts, and more. Weather Underground also utilizes over 22,000 neighborhood weather stations, giving you "the most localized weather information available."
Overall, Weather Underground's app seems to live up to the name established by "the internet's first ever weather site." Best of all, the app is completely free in the Android Market, so there's no reason not to check it out. Read More
