[Update: IFA teaser confirms] Leaked TCL product roadmap signals folding phone coming next year

TCL may be more known for its TVs than its own phones, but it's had opportunities to flex its mobile muscle by gaining ODM contracts — first, Alcatel Mobile, then BlackBerry, later Palm. Well, at this point, things are seemingly at a lull for the Chinese manufacturer, but it supposedly does have plans for itself when it comes to a real TCL phone or two (or even five).

Huawei further delays folding Mate X, still projects 2019 release

Folding phones are tricky to get right, their manufacturers are finding. In light of Samsung's well-documented troubles with its Galaxy Fold, Huawei previously delayed the release of its own folding device, the Mate X, from a June release date until September. Now, that release date has been pushed even further, according to TechRadar.

Foldable phones with glass screens could be a few years away, says Corning

We had the chance to see foldable phones at MWC, and although they looked promising, they didn't seem quite ready yet. One of the reasons for this was the absence of glass to cover their flexible panels, which were instead housed in plastic polymers. Not only does this material feel cheaper, it's also a lot less durable and much more prone to scratches. Foldable devices may be different in a couple of years, though, as Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, is currently working on bendable glass to protect flexible screens.

Foldable phones don't seem ready yet, and they're definitely not worth $2000

"It's the first generation." I heard it over and over during Mobile World Congress whenever the topic of foldable smartphones inevitably arose. Everyone is talking about foldables (which yes, that's not a word, except now it is), and everyone has a take. They're the game-changing future our ever-expanding screens require. They're going to be huge with [insert demographic/region/niche here]. They're expensive now, but they won't always be. They're not going to be very good now, either, but just wait - this is only the first generation.
