As anyone who uses apps that allow for fingerprint authentication will know, the UI for each app's prompt can differ wildly. Android P will attempt to combat this by providing a new API. Additionally, Google will be blocking cleartext (unencrypted HTTP) by default for apps that use Network Security Configurations. Read More
A few days ago, the Huawei P20 was leaked with a brand-new design. Many people, myself included, weren't fans of it, especially because of the fingerprint sensor that was crammed into the front bezel. But if you were okay with the rest of the design, perhaps you'll find the P20 Lite more to your liking. Read More
At CES, we got to check out an in-display fingerprint sensor on a device from Chinese manufacturer Vivo. This type of scanner has been rather popular with the rumor mill for some time now, but Vivo is the only company to have gone ahead and put it in a production device. The X20 Plus UD is the world's first smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, and it's now up for pre-order in China for the equivalent of $565 USD. Read More
Last year's Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus both received high praises in our reviews. Those phones both sported front-mounted fingerprint sensors, just as Galaxy devices and iPhones did for many years. However, it looks like Lenovorola may be moving the fingerprint sensor to the back for the Moto E5, according to a leaked image. Read More
Magisk is probably one of the most well-known and widely used root solutions these days, made famous for its root-detection mitigation strategies. Many Nexus 5X and 6P owners were understandably annoyed after discovering that several of the headline features announced for the new Pixel and Pixel XL would not be coming to their own devices. The Nexus line had always been synonymous to getting the latest and greatest directly from Google, and suddenly realizing that wasn't entirely true in a post-Nexus era left some users with a bad taste in their mouth.
To add insult to injury, it had recently come to light that both the Nexus 6P and the Pixel shared the exact same fingerprint sensor, triggering the habitual witch hunt on Reddit because of the former's lack of fingerprint swipe gestures. Read More
After having a Nexus 6P, I think I'd find it pretty difficult to go back to not having a fingerprint sensor. It's just such a convenient way to quickly and easily unlock my phone. The Sony Xperia XZ and X Compact (this year's model) both have fingerprint sensors, but weirdly on the US editions (and possibly others from around the world), they are disabled via software. Xperiablog has found that by flashing the UK firmware, the sensor can be enabled.
Left: US firmware - 1304-9206. Right: UK firmware - 1305-2216.
A thread on XDA details the process - in essence, download and install Xperiafirm, Xperia Companion (from Sony), and Flashtool. Read More
FolderSync is a super powerful Android tool that has been around the block for several years and has been growing stronger with each update. Its main job is to synchronize folders between your phone and different cloud storage providers like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, and more.
The most recent update to the app to version 2.9.0 added a couple of features that keep it updated with the latest Marshmallow APIs. If you're using a pin code to lock unwanted users from accessing the app, you can now unlock faster using the fingerprint sensor on your phone. And when you first install the app on a new device, you'll be able to grant granular access to different permissions thanks to Marshmallow's runtime permissions. Read More
Sony made some tweaks to its design aesthetic this year to accommodate the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor in the power button of the Z5. It's not as accurate as I'd like, but it's still nice to have. However, a number of reports claim that Sony will not include this feature in the newly announced US variants of the phone. We reached out to Sony and got confirmation: no fingerprint reader for the US. Read More
