Google is waging war against EV range anxiety

For many, the hardest part of having an electric vehicle is route planning on longer trips. In-range drives aren't really an issue, but if you have to stop to charge, it can be a bit of a hassle estimating when and where to do it, and it gets more complicated the longer the trip is. A conservative estimate just wastes time, which is already at a premium with you having to wait at each pit stop to top up. But for EVs with Google Maps built-in, like the recent Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge, it's less of an issue thanks to some new tweaks rolling out now.

Google Maps can now search for electric vehicle charging stations by plug type

If you've never had an electric car, you might not know that there are multiple charging connectors used by different makers - Nissan's vehicles use CHAdeMO, BMW and VW use CCS, Tesla uses its own proprietary connector, and so on. Google Maps added the ability to search for charging stations earlier this year, and now you can filter results based on what type of plugs are available.

[Update: It launched] Volvo XC40 will be one of the first cars to run Android Automotive

Google has been working on the native version of Android for cars, Android Automotive, for years. After Volvo offered us a first look at the operating system on its all-electric Polestar 2 back in May, the car manufacturer is now ready to deploy Automotive to another upcoming EV. The company has announced that the XC40 will run Android, too.
