There's a ⚫ emoji message that freezes or completely crashes apps, but it's no big deal

You may have already come across it and wondered how just tapping on a single emoji can cause an app to freeze and become unresponsive. The answer, unsurprisingly, is that it can't.

[Update: Facebook, Microsoft join in] Google is turning its pistol emoji into a squirt gun

A few years ago, Apple was the first big emoji designer to stop rendering the "pistol" emoji as a real gun. It went from a revolver to a green squirt gun, and other companies have just started coming around. Twitter and Samsung already made the change, and now it's Google's turn. Google Maps is testing landmarks in navigation instructions, v9.76 beta prepares support for community-added events [APK Teardown]

Google Maps recently made news as a few people started getting audible instructions with the names of visible landmarks in place of hard-to-see and sometimes indiscernible street names. In very nearly the same breath, v9.76 began rolling out through the beta channel late last night. SwiftKey kills off its redundant Swiftmoji app 😵

In 2016, SwiftKey released Swiftmoji, a new keyboard with predictive emoji, to make it faster to insert the colorful little characters into your messages and status updates. Swiftmoji worked essentially the same way SwiftKey's main keyboard did, with autocorrect and predictive typing, but with the distinction that it featured an additional bar at the top of the keyboard to display emoji suggestions based on context. Two years later, SwiftKey is finally shutting down Swiftmoji, as the app is now redundant and most of the functionality has already been rolled into the standard keyboard.

"Machine learning" and "neural network" are familiar terms to anyone who follows what Google is up to these days, but they may not be the most accessible or comprehensible concepts for the masses. And that's fine — you don't need to have a firm grasp of machine learning to enjoy better photos or keyboards, for instance. Still, Google has been quietly showcasing ways for users to get more hands-on with these concepts, and the latest such experiment is a game called Emoji Scavenger Hunt.

Apparently, Samsung has something similar up its sleeve for the Galaxy S9, and the report also mentions several other potential inclusions.
