Google finally brings Emoji Kitchen to all your devices

Two years after the official debut, iPhone users can partake in the fun

Google keeps cooking up new experiments behind closed doors, with recent developments showing up in the AI Test Kitchen. However, the company also has another Kitchen which opened its proverbial doors to the masses in early 2020 — Emoji Kitchen. The fun feature has been a Gboard staple since its introduction, but now Google is making Emoji Kitchen accessible to a much larger user base directly through Google Search.

Google has long offered the so-called Emoji Kitchen in Gboard, a feature that lets you combine two emoji to create a totally new mashup sticker that embodies both, and yet, I still find myself in awe when I discover a new combination that I hadn't come across before. This has quickly become my favorite Gboard feature — possibly even the favorite feature on any software keyboard I've ever used, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Google did it again. A whole set of new Emoji Kitchen creations has dropped alongside new Unicode emoji, created by emoji chef Jennifer Daniel, chair for the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee. As with any of these updates, there are tons of fun additions that just make sense, but Jennifer Daniel wouldn't be Jennifer Daniel if she didn't include one, two, or dozens of nightmare-ish creations that will make you or the recipients of your messages trip.

There's no shortage of great keyboard apps on Android, but we're pretty partial to Gboard. Not only is it totally customizable, but its emoji support is second to none. Emoji Kitchen allows you to mix and match different emoticons together, creating everything from loving animals to confused cowboys and everything in between. With contextual suggestions, Gboard's about to make it even easier to use your custom emoji in everyday conversation.

Gboard's fancy custom text stickers are shedding their Pixel-exclusive status

Months after they arrived in a Pixel Feature Drop, Google's stickers are coming to all Android users

Every Pixel owner is looking forward to next week's expected Feature Drop, which should bring all sorts of improvements previewed in recent QPR betas to Google's latest flagships. That said, every Android user has something to look forward to this month as well. With June officially here, Google is highlighting a handful of new experiences now available on every supported device on the market, including some new changes to Gboard and — of course — the Emoji Kitchen.

Android 13 Beta 2 expands what you can create with Emoji Kitchen

It's time to emoji all the things

Google I/O 2022 arrived with multiple hardware and software announcements, but it also came with Android 13 Beta 2 — the next big staple in the development of Google's next operating system. This is a relatively small beta bump, but it makes things look more finalized as we head toward a stable release later this year. It does have a few neat things up its sleeve, though. Among these are improvements to our beloved Emoji Kitchen in Gboard. With the new Android 13 Beta update, more emoji are getting the ability to get kitchen-ified.

Jennifer Daniel talks Gboard, mashup "types," and spiders

The Emoji Kitchen mashups might already feel like they've been around since the dawn of time, or the dawn of emoji, anyway, but they are still a recent development, with new and fanciful combinations landing in Gboard regularly. We've all used them, but some of the "how" and "why" behind the fun and fanciful combinations remain (perhaps appropriately) mysterious. For example, did you know that there were five distinct "types" of emoji mashups, with another potentially planned?

Debuting as a Pixel 6-exclusive feature, Gboard's grammar checking started expanding to other Pixels back in February without much fanfare. Now it seems Google says it's officially expanding it widely to all Android phones. On top of that, Gboard is also getting over 2000 new Emoji Kitchen mashup combinations, with the fun formulaic stickers covering an even wider variety of expressions.

Google recognizes just how much fun people are having with Emoji Kitchen, Gboard's tool for combining two different emoji into an often-unexpected (but alwasy amusing) mashup. The mix-and-match sticker pack contains a veritable zoo full of fun, and with its latest expansion introduces the ability to make your own “tiger king.”

The year's nearly up, but Google isn't missing out on one last opportunity to bring a whole bunch of new features to Android ahead of the holiday season. Whether you're looking for new ways to decorate your home screen, look back on treasured memories, or move into the future with fresh features for cars and Assistant. Here's everything coming to Android starting today.

Google brings us up to speed with what's new-new (and kinda-new) for Android

The teased Android TV remote, some Gboard improvements, and a few Pixel-exclusive features are coming to your phone

Today, Google has announced the rollout of a whole pile of "new" features for Android and Android Auto — 16 changes, by Google's count. Of course, this is Google, so "new" in many of these cases means they've been spotted in testing for months, and you may have been using many of them already. The tweaks cover a wide range, including accessibility improvements and Android Auto (which we'll cover separately to help streamline things just a little bit), but highlights include a new remote control for Android TV built right into your phone, an Assistant reminders hub, several time-saving Gboard improvements, and the trickle-down of a few Pixel-exclusive features.

Gboard's emoji mashup stickers are one of the best things about using Google's software keyboard these days. They cover a gamut from cute, to funny, to even a bit disturbing — avocado spider will haunt your dreams. Now Gboard is adding another trick that makes it even easier to use them, offering up emoji kitchen stickers contextually based on what you type. Better, the much-loved blobmoji that were retired with Android 8.0 Oreo are also back in the new Emoji Kitchen mashups.

Emoji Kitchen is one of the funnest things to make its way into Gboard in years, and Google is constantly working on improving the emoji mix-and-match feature. In its latest iteration, we finally get support for the newest emoji that were introduced as part of Unicode 13.1.

Our 10 favorite Android features from 2020

'twas a good year in a few ways

2020 has been a standout year in more ways than one. On personal, national, and global levels, many of us have faced hardships and had to adapt to new realities and life-altering changes. On this day, though, I'd like to put the negative thoughts aside and focus on what has kept us rolling here at Android Police despite it all.

Android gets thousands of new emoji combinations, AI-generated audiobooks, and more

Emoji Kitchen, Play Books, and Voice Access get new features this holiday season

Christmas is right around the corner, and Google wanted to spoil us with a bunch of new features this holiday season. From expanding its emoji kitchen, to offering AI-generated audiobooks, and easier hands-free access for people with disabilities, there's a lot to pick from. In addition to these features, Google also expanded Android Auto to 36 more countries, rolled out a new Go tab in Maps to make it easier to navigate to frequently visited places, and updated Nearby Share to send apps.

In early 2020, Google began testing a new emoji mashup feature that suggests a few funky stickers each time you try to insert a regular emoji in Gboard. The option later rolled out under the official Emoji Kitchen moniker and has been relatively the same ever since. Now, we're seeing a whole bunch of fresh mashups made possible by a new combo system that lets you pick any (well, almost any) two emojis and get a sticker out of them.
