Amazon Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen) review: Great concept, poor execution

Good luck using it as a simple clock

Smart displays with small screens seem like the perfect addition to a desk or nightstand — with better aesthetics than a typical smart speaker. A 5-inch screen works well as an alarm clock or music player but is too small for any serious video streaming.

The Amazon Echo Show 5 remains one of the best and easiest ways to jump into the Amazon smart home ecosystem and one of the best Echo Show smart displays the retail giant sells. It packs a ton of functionality, including streaming music, coordinating other smart home devices, and keeping tabs on your Amazon orders (alongside many other skills that range from superfluous to genuinely useful).

Amazon's been cozy with Fire OS, a tweaked version of open source Android, in its streaming devices, Fire tablets, and smart speakers. But it was recently found that the company has been sneaking around with an in-house operating system, dubbed Vega OS, aiming to one day kick Android to the curb across the board. It turns out that Amazon has already made the switch from Android to Vega on at least one device.

Amazon has a huge catalog of smart displays you can pick from, but buying a device for yourself or another adult differs greatly from doing so for children. To make life simpler for you, and a tad bit more enjoyable for your child, Amazon offers Echo Dot Kids and Echo Show Kids models. They boast an impressive array of child-specific options along with all the requisite parental controls. If you have several kids or just want to indulge an only child, Amazon is offering a buy-one-get-one (BOGO) deal on the latest Echo Show 5 Kids. You just need to use the coupon code SHOW5KIDS at checkout to avail the offer.

Amazon offers its Echo Show lineup of smart displays in different sizes to cater to different needs. The smallest entrant in the series—Echo Show 5—is ideal for use in your bedroom. On the other end of the spectrum is the Echo Show 15, sporting a massive 15.6-inch display that can be hung on the wall. If you have been eyeing Amazon's largest smart display for a while, the e-commerce giant has a deal that bundles the Echo Show 5 for free, helping justify its steep $250 price tag.

Get an Echo Show for $10 when you buy one of these discounted Blink XT2 cameras

Blink once and you'll miss this sweet deal

Amazon introduced its Blink XT2 smart security camera system last summer, and while it didn't quite compare to the likes of Nest and Arlo, it stood out for its affordability. It was already a good value for someone looking to do wireless security, and now it's even better with the bonus of a basically free screen. For a limited time only, you can buy an Echo Show 5 for only $10 when you pick up a set of Blink XT2 cameras.

With Halloween in the rearview mirror and November speeding like a freight train toward Thanksgiving, the official holiday shopping season will be here before you know it. To help you get a jumpstart on your wishlist, we have a sneak peek at some of the Amazon device deals leading into Black Friday. As it does every year, Amazon will be hosting a huge multi-day sale on many of its popular products, including Kindle, Ring, and Blink. You'll have to wait for the specific day to snag the products you want, but you'll be rewarded with big savings.

Internet-connected doorbell cameras are one of the most popular categories of smart home devices but, the wiring work required to install many of these products has made them unavailable to those who rent, rather than own. One of the few renter-friendly doorbell cameras on the market, Ring's Peephole Cam, is currently available on Amazon as part of a bundle that includes a rechargeable battery pack and an Echo Show 5 for $180.This bundle contains everything you'll need to get your smart doorbell up and running. Users can view camera footage in the Ring app, through the peephole itself, or by using Alexa integration with the included Echo Show 5. With Ring's free plan, users can view real-time footage, interact with visitors, or receive motion detection alerts. However, you'll need to upgrade to the Ring Protect plan that starts at $3 per month or $30 per year to view video recordings. While the battery does need to be removed to charge, a second pack is included to minimize charging-related downtime.

When Amazon introduced the Echo Show 5, a 5-inch variant of the Echo Show back in May, it was well suited to win over users looking for a smaller or more affordable smart display. Its initial price of $90 was more affordable than other products in this space, and we've seen it drop as low as $65 in the past few months. But now, the Echo Show 5 is available from Amazon for a new low of only $60, which is a savings of 33%.In many ways, the Echo Show 5 is just a smaller Echo Show as it still includes a built-in camera and microphone that allow users to make and receive video calls or communicate with Alexa. However, the quality of the camera sensor has been reduced from 5MP to 1MP, presumably to reduce costs. Last, but not least, since this device could potentially replace your bedside alarm clock, users can disable the camera and microphone altogether for more privacy.

Wi-Fi video doorbells are much more convenient than traditional ones in the sense that they let you keep an eye on your front door wherever you are. However, it can be painful to look for your phone or tablet when someone rings the bell, which is why they're a lot more practical when used in combination with a smart display. Buying both can quickly break the bank, though, but thanks to this deal, you can get a free Echo Show 5 with the purchase of a Ring Video Doorbell 2, which saves you about $90 on the device's retail price.

At the end of May, Amazon introduced a new 5-inch smart display with hopes to satisfy buyers looking for a smaller device than the Show but bigger than the Spot, and also to compete with Lenovo's Smart Clock. The initial $90 price was also reasonably positioned in comparison to other smart devices, but just two months after its release, the Echo Show 5 is currently on sale for $65, which is almost 30% off.

A smart speaker in itself is convenient, but it becomes so much more useful when used in combination with intelligent plugs or lights. Their price can sometimes be discouraging, but thanks to this deal, you'll be able to set up your smart home infrastructure without breaking the bank. Best Buy is throwing in a TP-link smart plug for just $5 for the purchase of an Echo device, most of which are already discounted. An Echo Dot + TP-link smart plug combo comes down to just $27, while a regular Echo and smart socket bundle will cost you $55.

More and more smart displays are coming onto the market, and Amazon's Echo Show 5 is one of the smaller offerings. As the name suggests (sort of), it has a rather minute 5.5" display, meaning it'll go head to head with Lenovo's similarly tiny Smart Clock. Amazon is currently offering a $30 pre-order discount for those who purchase two, bringing the price down to $149.98 for both. The Echo Show 5 debuted late last month. It differs from the Lenovo Smart Clock with its built-in camera, though the 1MP sensor probably isn't good for much other than an outline of the person on the other end. It also has aa 1.65" speaker, two microphones, Wi-Fi AC, a 3.5mm output, and Bluetooth.
