'Ok Google' detection is currently broken on many phones

Judging by the Google Assistant help forums, Twitter, and Reddit, a whole lot of people are having trouble getting their phones to respond to voice commands. Twelve of the 20 top posts are complaining about the problem on several different device models and even in several languages. Google says it's on the case, though.

The once-handy home screen Google search bar is acting up on Pixel devices. Many users, including some here at Android Police, are experiencing an annoying glitch that causes the bar to not show search history or suggestions of any kind.

Spel chekc on Gboard iz brokken for manny

In adishion to offring automtic txt corection, Adnroid is suposed to underline mispelled wordz in red.

The feature is labeled "spell checker" in the system settings, and it's been out of commission for a while now. Comments on a Google Issue Tracker post about the general low quality of Gboard's text correction from April mention the problem, and a recent Reddit thread says the issue has persisted since November of last year.

Opera VPN for Android is shutting down today

Today's the end of the line for the Opera VPN app and its viking mascot Olaf. Former Opera VPN users can snag a couple of deals on SurfEasy VPN products, though: Opera Gold users get a free year of SurfEasy Ultra, which normally costs $11.99 a month, and anyone using Opera VPN can get SurfEasy Total for 99 cents a month instead of its usual $4.99. Like Opera VPN, SurfEasy Total and Ultra both block ad tracking and neither puts a cap on data.

Capcom is killing 'Puzzle Fighter' on July 31, less than a year after launch

Capcom announced in a blog post yesterday that it's winding down support for its free-to-play puzzle game, Puzzle Fighter. In-app purchases will be available until April 23, and the game will be removed from app stores on July 1. The game's servers will shut down on July 31, making it unplayable.

'Chat' will be Google's new name for RCS, Allo development paused in favor of Android Messages

It's a meme at this point: Every two years, Google announces yet another new messaging platform that will finally give Android its iMessage competitor. Those of you hoping Allo might break this cycle will be disappointed today, as The Verge has revealed that Google is pausing development for Allo and switching focus to the existing Android Messages app, paired with an investment in branding RCS messaging into something called "Chat."

[Update: It's back] Opera VPN has disappeared from the Play Store without explanation

Opera VPN first debuted in August 2016, claiming to offer a completely free solution that would block ads and make your browsing more secure. However, Opera has undergone quite a few changes since then, including a sale to a Chinese company (that hadn't been finalized when Opera VPN debuted), renaming its Android TV browser, and more. It's now disappeared from the Play Store, and we're not sure why.
