[Update: Web rollout] Google Keep rolling out dark mode for some users [APK Download]

Google has been very busy updating its apps with dark themes lately. The search app itself currently has a half-broken dark mode for some users, and services like Google News, Messenger and Calculator have had it in a functioning state for a while now. All of this is happening in preparation for Android Q's system-wide theme, but of course, users on earlier versions of the OS also profit from it. The latest app to receive dark mode is Google Keep, and we've got some screenshots courtesy of tipster Kreeper.

Google shares how it designed dark theme for Photos, Calendar, News, and the upcoming Android Auto

Google has had dark themes in work for a long time, with YouTube being one of the first apps to receive an optional alternative design back in 2018, followed by a plethora of other Google apps. The company had also experimented with system-wide dark themes before, as Android 8.1 Oreo was the first version to come with limited automatic theming options based on your wallpaper, followed by a toggleable theme switcher in Pie. With the announcement of a proper dark mode in Android Q, Google now officially commits to supporting two themes, and with that, the company shared how its developers created the toned-down versions of their apps on Thursday.

Android Q Beta 4 uses a simple switch for dark mode, quashing hopes for additional themes

At Google I/O this year, Google finally announced a dark mode for Android. We've been expecting this ever since the first Q build leaked, but the settings app has always suggested that there could be more than only a white and dark mode. Up until Beta 3, there was a complete theme selector where more options apart from "Dark" and "Light" could've shown up. However, the recently released Beta 4 does away with this interface and instead switches to a simple toggle for Dark Theme.

Google Photos dark mode rolling out to Android Pie and Oreo

Google has been hard at work to give many of its apps (and Android itself) a dark mode – much to the universal joy of people annoyed by the company's move towards a more generous use of white space. Google Photos had one of the buggiest implementations of the new theme, as it only surfaced with a half-black, half-white interface on Android Q in the beginning and didn't even have a toggle to turn it on or off inside the app. By now, its UI problems are fixed, and thus, dark mode appears to be rolling out wider. It shows up for users on Android Pie and Oreo with their own system dark themes enabled.

20 more Android apps with a dark mode that are easy on the eyes

We know how much y'all like dark themes, whether it's because they match the color of your heart, are easier on the eyes, save some battery life on your phone's AMOLED display, or simply look nice. About a year ago, we put together a list of thirty apps featuring a dark, but given Android Q will natively support that feature, we wanted to share some more apps that match its dim style. Don't worry though, most of them work with Oreo and Pie too, so you'll still get to join the dark side even if your phone doesn't get updated to Q soon.
