Android Q has an alternative, hidden, and sort of broken dark mode

Android Q is the first version of our favorite OS that comes with built-in support for a dark mode. However, there aren't yet a ton of apps supporting the automatic theme switch that should allow people to change their interfaces' colors with one tap. Thus, Android Q has an option to "override-force-dark," which just takes white interfaces and tries to reverse colors intelligently. Now, another dark theme has surfaced that will probably turn out to be a bug – let's call it "alternative dark mode." It only differs slightly from override-force-dark and looks like the bastard child of this one and the regular dark mode.

[Update: APK Download] Google Calendar gets the dark mode treatment

Google is continuing to roll out dark modes for its apps, most probably in preparation to match its upcoming OS-wide night theme. After updating Messages, ContactsCalculator, and Keep, the company is now focusing on Calendar, so people can enjoy an interface that's easier on the eyes, saves battery, and looks nicer — at least to some people — to manage their schedule.

[Update: Night Mode, more screenshots] Here's our first look at WhatsApp's dark mode

There are few things in life more certain than Android users getting excited about an app adding a dark mode. Personally, white text on black/dark backgrounds tires my eyes, especially during daytime, but I'm not here to argue with you about personal preferences. If you like dark modes in apps, you'll be happy to know that WhatsApp is working on its own.

Google Search app experiments with Dark Theme [APK Download]

Last week during its annual developer conference, Google announced that it would introduce a dark mode with Android 10 Q. The signs have been pointing towards that ever since the beta started, but now the company is putting more steam behind the new theme. Over the weekend, we've received tips that the Google app has a dark color scheme in the works, although it's still looking rather wonky, unfinished, and inconsistent across users.

[Update: OTA, 3a images] Android Q Beta 3 is now available, delivers plenty of new features

Following our previous expectations and just in time for developers in attendance at the ongoing I/O developer conference, Google has just pushed out downloads for Android Q Beta 3. Google shares Dark Theme guidance for Material Design

During the I/O keynote, Google has finally made Dark Theme for Android 10 Q official. We've seen that change coming, but thus far, we didn't receive a word on the best practices for implementing dark themes in apps. This has changed now, as Google updated the Material Design guidelines with information on this.

Google officially confirms Android Q is launching with a Dark Theme

Google has just started talking about Android Q on stage at I/O and has now officially confirmed that the new version of the OS will come with the glorious, long-awaited Dark Theme. The company says the new look will help you save battery on your device, since black and grey don't need as much light and thus power as white and bright colors.

Chrome will soon support dark themes in websites

Web browsers currently handle dark mode in one of two ways. Some of them, like Samsung Browser, simply invert the colors of the web page. This sometimes breaks the site's design, but it works universally. Another approach is to let sites know that dark mode is activated, and let them use an alternative theme. Chrome appears to be joining the latter camp, as the browser's development team announced support for the 'prefers-color-scheme' browser feature.

Android Q's automatic light and dark mode switch is properly working now

With Google putting all its weight behind dark mode in Android Q, beta testers were a little miffed when they discovered that there was no user-facing on/off toggle for the mode. It was hidden behind an adb command, and everyone rushed to either set it to on or off. However, there was an auto value too, but it wasn't working properly. For some, it never changed between modes, and for others, it only changed once then stopped working. That automatic switch appears to be functional now.

Google Calculator gets dark theme with update to v7.6 [APK Download]

Regular readers will be well aware by now that Google is in the process of adding a dark mode to all of its core Android apps, including Phone, Contacts, Messages, and so on, supposedly in preparation for the holy grail — a system-wide dark mode. An app of slightly lesser importance is the Google Calculator, but it's receiving the dark mode treatment nonetheless.
