[Weekend Poll] Do You Have A Chromecast? Did You Have To Buy It From A 3rd Party / Import It?

Google made a whole lot of folks happy this week, particularly Chromecast owners, by finally opening up the SDK for the media stick to the public.

This means some of your favorite apps will likely be receiving updates in the near (or not so near, as the case may be) future allowing them to stream content to your television through your Chromecast. Exciting times, indeed. Support for the API on the user end was implemented in the recent Play Services 4.2 update, so you should be able to start using those apps that have already added Chromecast support immediately.

AllCast Regains Chromecast Support Less Than A Day After The Release Of The Google Cast SDK

AllCast pushes locally stored videos and photos to various AirPlay/DLNA connected devices such as Smart TVs, the Xbox 360 (and the Xbox One), Roku boxes, and, originally, the Chromecast. Ultimately, Google released an update that broke AllCast's Chromecast support. But the company finally released the Google Cast SDK yesterday, and then, after getting prodded by a member of the Google Chomecast team to re-add support for Chromecast, Koushik Dutta returned the functionality to his app in supposedly under 20 minutes of work.

Google Finally Opens Up The Chromecast To Developers With Release Of Google Cast SDK, Now Part Of Google Play Services 4.2

The Chromecast is cheap, affordable, and easy-to-use. Great. That's almost all you need to have a stellar product. Unfortunately, it's been held up by a lack of content. Today Google has released the Google Cast SDK. This way additional developers can finally build Chromecast support into their apps and websites.

Google's Chromecast is cheap and awesome, but it only performs a very specific set of functions, and even venturing out as far as tab casting gives murky results. It comes with complete access to the Play Store, so you can use it to keep up with episodes of The Daily Show, listen to Lady Gaga, defend towers, or, you know, be productive.

Use Chromecast To Create A Virtual Fireplace And Let The Gentle Glow Of Your TV Keep You Warm

For many of us, it's getting cold outside. While there's always the option to invest in a thicker coat, bundle up in more blankets, or crank up the thermostat, none of these options particularly involve Android (with some exceptions). So here's another approach. Fire up YouTube on your Android device of choice and load up this YouTube channel. Send it out to the nearest Chromecast and you have yourself a warm fire that will burn for the next hour or so.
