Here at AP, we're quite fond of Ultimate Ears' MEGABOOM Bluetooth speaker. In our review of it from back in 2015, we found that it was tough, sounded great, and had a nice companion app. The only major sticking point - its MSRP of $299.99 (which it still retails for, by the way) makes it pretty pricey for a Bluetooth speaker. However, Best Buy is currently selling refurbished units of the MEGABOOM for just $129.99 a pop, making it a much more enticing value. Read More
Amazon is running one of today's Gold Box deals on JBL's Flip 3 splashproof portable bluetooth speaker. These normally sell for a few pennies under $100, but for the next few hours, Amazon is selling them for $63.99, netting customers a 36% discount.
The Flip 3 is one of the most well-reviewed portable bluetooth speakers on the market, earning a 4.4 star rating from customers on Amazon. Our own former contributor Cameron really loved it when he reviewed it back when it first launched. I personally own one myself and can speak for how much sound this little guy can put out. Read More
Scandinavian brand Urbanears is branching out of the headphones market to launch its first speakers: the Baggen and the Stammen. These are almost the same speaker made in two different sizes, wrapped in 360-deg fabric, and available in neutral colors like black, grey, and navy, but also interesting shades like light pink, dark green, and bold orange.
The reason we're talking about them is that they're connected speakers and come with plenty of integrations out of the box: Chromecast Built-in, Apple Airplay, and Spotify Connect. Read More
Boom boom goes the speaker and megaboom goes its price. If you want big sound in a portable Bluetooth speaker, UE's MEGABOOM is a great place to start, especially if you have the dough to finance it. The waterproof and shockproof speaker is often a little discounted past its $299.99 MSRP, but it always hovers around the $240 mark like it is currently on Amazon.
But if you don't mind getting a refurbished unit, there's a nicer deal to be had at Best Buy. It's offering a refurb UE MEGABOOM for $139.99, with 2-year warranty for parts and labor, and covered under Best Buy's Return and Exchange promise. Read More
V-MODA announced the newest member of its audio product portfolio today, the REMIX, the company's first Bluetooth speaker. It's available for purchase starting today and retails for $300. Measuring in at around 8 inches long and 1.6-1.9lbs (depending on which finish you chose), the speaker is portable, but not petite. At $300, the REMIX is at the top end of the price spectrum for mid-size Bluetooth speakers but V-MODA feels the price is justified by top-notch sound and a couple of unique features.
The most compelling feature the REMIX offers is something you won't find in any other speaker on the market. Read More
Smartphones have never produced particularly good sound through their speakers. Sure, phones like the older HTC Ones, the Nexus 6 and 6P, and the Axon 7 have dual front-facing ones, but none of those are any match for a true, dedicated speaker. Even the JBL Moto Mod for the Moto Z line isn't all that great for its price and size. Now, though, you can get a highly-rated and highly portable Bluetooth speaker in the form of the UE ROLL 2 for just $49.99 on Amazon. Read More
As far as Bluetooth speakers go, the UE ROLL 2 is probably one of the best, at least if you're aiming at under $100. However, now you can score one for $68 at Amazon and Wal-Mart, provided you're OK with grey or blue. Read More
The Amazon Echo and its integrated assistant Alexa have seen a lot of success and popularity over the past year, and now more companies have been tempted to build their own iterations of the product. Some, like Lenovo, have decided to nearly copy the entire idea, from the form factor to the Alexa integration. The result is the Lenovo Smart Assistant Speaker.
It's a cylindrical tower, much like the Echo, with a speaker grille at the bottom and what seems to be a rising control panel with volume and trigger buttons and an array of 8 360-deg far-field microphones with noise suppression that can pick up voices from up to 5m away. Read More
Levitating speakers are the novelty item of the past couple of years. You can find a new one on Kickstarter every month or so and Amazon has a collection of them for sale, some of which are shaped like the Death Star for an added cool effect. The magic, if you consider it that, is due to electromagnets that keep the speaker hanging in mid-air above its main station and without it falling.
At CES, LG will show off its own take on the levitating speaker: the PJ9. The announcement article isn't very clear on some details, but it lets us know that the PJ9 will have a battery that lasts 10 hours after which the speaker will drop down to charge wirelessly. Read More
One of the finest $200 Bluetooth speakers out there is the UE Boom 2. I own one and it is a benchmark device that I use to compare any speaker in a similar price range that is sent to me for testing. Few sound as good as it does, and none also boast all the other great features the speaker offers. Those features include an eye-catching design, long battery life, a waterproof and shockproof body, and Google Now voice integration. Read More
