Bixby comes to Samsung Gear S3 smartwatches ahead of S-Voice shutdown

Samsung's smartwatches are one of the better choices when it comes to the Android side of wearables. The company released its Gear S3 watch back in 2016 to solid reviews, and it has kept owners on their feet with new updates since then. Last year, the S3 received an update to Samsung's One UI, and now it looks like a new update, System Update 7, is rolling out.

Netflix adds support for Bixby Voice, as promised at Unpacked

Netflix just added support for Bixby Voice to its Android app on the Play Store, according to a recently updated changelog, and we can confirm that the feature is live and working in the latest update. Samsung device owners that actually use Bixby (presumably, such folks exist), will be able to play content via the streaming service with nothing more than their voice — like those using Google Assistant have been able to do since basically forever.

Samsung doubles down on Spotify with one-touch Galaxy Buds+ support, deeper app integration

Samsung and Spotify have been partnered for almost two years now, and tucked into the bevy of announcements during today's Samsung Unpacked was an expansion of that partnership. The Galaxy S20, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Buds+ will include several new, quick ways to listen to and share your favorite Spotify tunes.

You can enable Bixby Routines on older Samsung phones like the Galaxy S9, and here's how (APK Download)

Samsung introduced a new feature called Bixby Routines to its phones last year, allowing you to set up simple automated rules for certain actions — sort of like IFTTT, or a less powerful, built-in version of Tasker for Samsung phones. Though it is available on devices like the Galaxy S10, Note10, and Galaxy Fold, Samsung never brought the feature to the older S9 or Note9, even in recent Android 10/One UI 2 updates. However, we have verified that sideloading the latest version of the Bixby Routines app brings the feature to older devices, including the Galaxy S9 and Note9, and it also works for some on older devices like the Galaxy S8 running Android Pie.

Samsung may release the Galaxy Home Mini on February 12

It has been almost two years since Samsung revealed the Bixby-powered Galaxy Home smart speaker, and a smaller version was announced in 2019, but neither product has actually been released yet. Now it looks like at least the Galaxy Home Mini will see the light of day, according to a now-removed Samsung press release.

Bixby Home to make way to Samsung Daily, bringing minor improvements (Update: Samsung Daily not ready yet)

Back in 2012, Samsung embedded Flipboard in its launcher, making news seamlessly accessible from the home screen. The company then used Upday on newer phones, until it released Bixby Home when it launched the Galaxy S8. In addition to being a simple news aggregator, the latter aimed at being a smarter assistant, with cards showing your next appointments, or even letting you order an Uber. However, the company has just announced it will replace Bixby Home with Samsung Daily, its new homescreen newsfeed app.

Samsung's Bixby 'Marketplace' is finally out, but it's a barren wasteland

Today, Samsung has revealed its new Bixby Marketplace, which aims to provide "Capsules," akin to Alexa Skills, that better expand the functionality of the company's frequently lambasted voice assistant. Unfortunately for Samsung, this brave new marketplace is launching in a nearly empty state, with only a few new installable third-party Capsules at the time of writing. Most of the Capsules in the market from big names are actually old, and appear to be a repackaging of previous Bixby integrations.

Samsung's Galaxy Home smart speaker — which you forgot about — finally has a release date

The Galaxy Home was announced alongside the Galaxy Note9 back in August of last year, but it's been radio silence for the Bixby smart speaker since then. Samsung's Consumer Electronics CEO now says that the Galaxy Home will be released in the third quarter of this year, meaning it'll have been around a year since its initial debut.

New Samsung 'AI speaker' shows up in FCC filing, could be a smaller Galaxy Home

Samsung unveiled its AKG-branded Galaxy Home smart speaker last summer alongside the Galaxy Note9. That speaker still isn't for sale, but it seems like the company might already be planning to expand the Galaxy Home line with what appears to be a smaller smart speaker submitted today for FCC approval.

Samsung Galaxy Buds update adds new touch control option and enhanced Bixby integration

The Samsung Galaxy Buds are one of the best options in the true wireless earbuds space right now — read my review if you want to know why — but one complaint some users have is a lack of touch control options. An update is arriving via the Galaxy Wearable app right now that adds one new ability, although it's not the completely separate volume control that some may be hoping for.
