Android 12 brings back the indispensable Wi-Fi toggle

Android 12 brings back the indispensable Wi-Fi toggle

A couple of beta versions ago, Android 12 rolled out a revamped internet connectivity interface that simplified the process of getting onto a network, regardless of whether it's data or Wi-Fi. The price of that simplification was the annoying removal of the standalone general Wi-Fi toggle. With the newest Beta 4 which was released yesterday, that toggle is back. Whew! It almost didn't make it!

Android 12 reaches 'platform stability' today, and Pixel phones are inviting all their friends to try it out, too

Today, Android 12 Beta 4 lands, and we're getting to the point that "Beta" means a lot less than it did before. On top of that, this Beta release is also coming to some devices from manufacturers like ASUS, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Sharp, and ZTE, so folks on more devices can enjoy testing it.

[Update: OTA rolling out] Android Q enters the home stretch with release of Beta 4

In keeping with the previously projected timeline, Android Q Beta 4 officially lands today. While we dig into this latest version looking for new additions or features (we've already spotted a wider gesture pill in one of the blog post's GIFs), a few details are known: Beta 4 finalizes the Android Q APIs for developers, giving them a firm platform to begin testing their app's compatibility; the SDK for Q (API level 29) is now official; and apps targeting Q can now be published to the Play Store.

Android Q Beta 4 has just been released, and while those of us in the Beta Program wait for OTAs to roll out via the more traditional (and slower) means, images for manual flashing are also available — though they don't get updates. If you're chomping at the bit to test out Beta 4, you can pull them down now.

Assistant-launching microphone button removed from Pixel launcher in Android P DP5

Assistant-launching microphone button removed from Pixel launcher in Android P DP5

Moving the Google search box to the bottom of the Pixel launcher was a divisive change, although it makes complete sense to me. From the moment the first developer preview of Android P was released, Google began messing around with unimportant things like the transparency of the launcher dock, but one useful little addition was that of a microphone icon in the search widget that could be used to summon the Assistant. As of the latest (and final) developer preview, the mic has vanished.

Android P gets a new auto-rotate icon in Developer Preview 5

Android P gets a new auto-rotate icon in Developer Preview 5

Google just dropped the fifth developer preview of Android P and there aren't an awful lot of changes for us to pick through. That makes sense since it's the last beta before the final release later in the year, which we can expect to look very much like it does right now. The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed one small change, however, in the shape of a new auto-rotate icon.
