The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are arguably Sony's best-looking phones yet. Unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in February, the latest Sony flagships have rear fingerprint sensors and sport 18:9 displays with far less bezel than we're accustomed to from Xperia devices. They both include the freshest Snapdragon 845 chip with 4GB of RAM and will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo.
I was impressed by them in my hands-on at MWC, especially in view of Sony finally embracing a more modern design aesthetic — even if the Compact is a little chunky. Sony doesn't usually concentrate on the US market too much, but we learned a couple of days ago that Best Buy would have both phones available to pre-order from today, and both are now live on the site in a range of different colors. In a rather unconventional move, Amazon has announced a partnership with Best Buy. The next generation of Amazon Fire TV Edition-branded smart TVs will be exclusively sold by Best Buy at retail stores, on BestBuy.com, and most interestingly, by Best Buy on Amazon.com as a third-party seller for the very first time. The Daydream View (2017) virtual reality headset was announced last October along with the Pixel 2 devices, bringing better lenses, a better fabric material, and a controller that matches its color. Ever since, it has dipped from its $99 MSRP price a few times, the last of which was a half-off at Best Buy in March. Now the offer is back, but it's not just Best Buy that is discounting it: the same $49 price is available on the Google Store and a few other retailers.
If you're intrigued by Virtual Reality and don't want to invest in thousands of dollars worth of equipment, the Daydream View remains one of the cheapest ways to dip your toes and see the potential uses. Read More
The Essential Phone's initial $700 price obviously wasn't very enticing, as the phone has since fallen to as low as $399 with a free 360 Camera attachment. Today's $399 deal from Amazon and Best Buy doesn't include the 360-degree camera, but let's be honest; you were never going to use that after the first day of ownership anyway. Read More
Ultimate Ears makes some really great portable speakers. One of their newest models is the UE BLAST, which was released earlier this year and which Richard reviewed last month, saying that it sounded great and could reach an "absurdly loud" volume. His main criticism was actually the speaker's price of $229.99, which, while arguably justified, is still a lot of money to put down for a portable speaker. Luckily, Amazon and Best Buy are selling the UE BLAST at a crazy discount today for only $99.99 — a whopping $130 less than its original price and almost half of what had previously been its best deal ever. Sony unveiled its latest flagship smartphones at Mobile World Congress a few months back, and they look different for the first time in many years. Well, they look different compared to past generational updates from Sony. The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are still obviously Sony hardware, but they adopt an 18:9 screen ratio and a rear fingerprint sensor. The high price is still classic Sony, though. Read More
Shortly after coming to the U.S., the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is already seeing a nice discount. You can pick up this phone for $649.99, $150 off MSRP, from Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, and Newegg. Honestly, this is a great deal. Read More
Huawei hasn't given up on the US market despite facing difficulties, CEO Richard Yu told CNET in an email. Chinese smartphone makers have had a rough go in the States in recent months, with US intelligence agencies cautioning consumers against purchasing electronics from firms like Huawei and Xiaomi. Samsung's Gear S3 is quite possibly the best smartwatch you can buy right now if you're an Android user. The design is classy, the display is gorgeous, battery life is above average in the category, Samsung Pay is supported, and the rotating bezel makes navigating the menus less cumbersome than tapping on a tiny display. Plus, props go to Samsung for making Tizen a compelling interface on smartwatches. But for $349 straight up, the S3 Frontier is one big investment that equals the price of a very nice midrange smartphone. If you've had your eye on one but couldn't pull the plug, you may want to check this refurb from Best Buy's Geek Squad for $184.99. Read More
Huawei isn't having an easy time in the US market. In January, it was revealed that both AT&T and Verizon had pulled out of deals to carry the Chinese company's smartphones due to pressure from the US government. CNET is now reporting that Best Buy is ending its partnership with Huawei, and that the retailer will no longer offer the company's smartphones for sale. Read More
