Best Buy to shut down all 250 U.S. mobile stores on May 31

Best Buy announced yesterday that it plans to shut down all of its small mobile phone stores effective May 31. This news should come as no surprise to anyone who passes by the miniature establishments, usually in shopping malls, and it seems like it is long overdue. Reportedly, they account for only 1% of the company's overall revenue and 1% of its total square footage.

Five major U.S. carriers announced yesterday that they would be carrying the Galaxy S III: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular. While pre-orders are already happening for some, Best Buy decided to get in on the action as well: it's now taking pre-orders for the the Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint variants of the device.

Best Buy Hearts Mobile, Plans Massive Expansion Of Mobile Brand With 600-800 New Stores Over The Next 5 Years

For those who have been paying attention, it's pretty clear that the mobile space is exploding, thanks largely to the rapid adoption of Android, iPhone, and, to a lesser extent, Windows Phone 7 devices. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Best Buy is planning to expand their stand-alone Best Buy Mobile brand by 600-800 locations over the next five years.

Best Buy Ad Leaks Ridiculous Activation Requirements And $799.99 Price Tag Of Motorola XOOM

A leaked ad from Best Buy shows that the Motorola XOOM will be priced at $799.99. It also confirms rumours that the tablet will be available in-store from February 24th.

The ad seems to be the real deal (complete with the trademarked Best Buy yellow price labels), however we couldn't help but notice a few glaring spelling mistakes. Either the ad is a fake, which is unlikely at this point, or Best Buy needs to fire its current spell-checker.

In any event, the above confirms that the Honeycomb tablet will only support Verizon's 3G network at launch but will be upgradeable to 4G at a later date.
