Qualcomm will now have to license standards-essential patents to competitors on reasonable terms

Last year, the FTC filed suit against Qualcomm for its patent licensing, alleging that the company wasn't giving competitors fair terms for standards-essential patents owned by the company. In what will likely prove to be a benefit to companies and consumers alike, yesterday the judge in the suit granted a motion for partial summary judgment, requiring that Qualcomm license those standards-essential patents to other chipset manufacturers under reasonable terms.

FTC files antitrust suit against Qualcomm alleging unfair patent licensing terms

Odds are that your phone has some Qualcomm silicon in it, and even if it doesn't the baseband processor (modem) probably includes some technology licensed from Qualcomm. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) now says that the way Qualcomm manages those patents amounts to anti-competitive behavior, and it's taking the company to court over it.

HTC Hero CDMA Custom ROM Users - Update Your Radio Baseband For Best Performance, Reception, And Battery Life

HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint, Cellular South, etc) users using a Custom ROM, such as damageless' DamageControl or flipz's Fresh, listen up.

In order to take advantage of the latest improvements Sprint has made to the phone's ability to receive and utilize signal efficiently, updating to the latest ROM is not enough.

Radio Baseband

There is a special component outside of the ROM itself called the Radio Baseband, which ROM developers don't include (for whatever reason) into the custom ROM images, and instead sometimes provide as a separate update.

For instance, my Hero is using DamageControl 2.08.1, and its Radio Baseband version is 1.04.01.09.21 (the 9/21 seems to be the release date).
