[Update x2: APK Download] Google's AR Stickers app is now Playground, with four new 'Playmoji' packs

Ahead of its hardware event today, even Google is leaking its own announcements. Earlier this morning, the company posted a $25 off deal when purchasing a Chromecast Ultra and not-yet-announced Google Home Hub. Now, it's posted to the Play Store four new AR "Playmoji" packs for its newly-renamed Playground app, none of which can currently be downloaded.

Snapchat introduces 'Snappables' AR selfie games

Snapchat will soon be gaining a set of augmented reality games called Snappables, Snap announced today. Snappables, which should roll out to Snapchatters later this week, are a new form of interactive Lenses through which users can play together (or by themselves) using AR. Some games can be controlled via more traditional methods like touch, but others can be played using motion and even facial expressions.

Google announces Augmented Reality Microscope platform to aid in cancer detection

Google announced in a blog post today that it's developed a prototype for a microscope system that uses artificial intelligence to automatically detect anomalies resembling cancerous growths in tissue samples. Google is calling it the Augmented Reality Microscope (ARM) platform, and it's currently capable of identifying breast and prostate cancer, although Google says it will be able to find any other type of cancer once its model is trained for it.

Jurassic World: Alive is a Pokémon Go-like dinosaur AR game, coming this spring

Apparently with the approaching theatrical release of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom there is going to be a tie-in mobile game published on Android that apes the augmented reality gameplay found in Niantic's games Ingress and Pokémon Go. This upcoming title is called Jurassic World: Alive and it is scheduled to hit the Play Store sometime this Spring. It's being developed by Ludia Games, a company that has already published 2 other Jurassic-themed mobile games in the past. So hopefully they know what they are doing with the property.

Google's new Visual Positioning Service will guide you through indoor locations

We are all familiar with GPS. It has been guiding us to our destinations for years. But what happens when you arrive and you need to find a specific store in the mall or a specific item in a grocery store? Google will have you covered with a new technology it announced today called "Visual Positioning Service" or VPS. This technology builds on the idea of augmented reality tightly coupled with real world information. It will look for distinct visual features in your environment to create a map of the location using only the camera on your phone.

Amazon Update Adds Flow Scanning Features To The Shopping App, Among Other Things

Remember Flow, Amazon's augmented reality shopping aid that kinda sorta worked? Well now you don't have to, because the functionality has been rolled into the main Amazon shopping app. Now you can scan barcodes and even full products (at least some of the time) to compare their prices to everyone's favorite online megamart. And incidentally, you don't need a second app to do it.

The Flow features work best with a barcode, but the camera scanner will try to identify anything. Products with clear logos or easily-recognizable labels, like DVDs or cereal boxes, work best. For example, Flow can't recognize a white Nexus 5 sans packaging, but it managed to spot the NVIDIA SHIELD from the printed photo on the retail box.

Sony Updates AR Effect Augmented Reality Camera App, Uploads Six New Themes To The Play Store

Megapixels, megashmixels. We could debate for near eternity over which smartphone has the best camera, but sometimes all that really matters is which is the most fun. Sony wants you to think its cameras are, so the company has updated its augmented reality camera app and tossed in an additional six new themes for good measure.

The AR Effect app lets certain Sony Xperia smartphone owners add objects and effects to their photos, fundamentally altering what is going on in the shot. Sony isn't the only smartphone maker to offer stickers and such out of the box, but this marks quite an effort to up its game.
