Chromebook updates will get harder to follow as Google kills version-tracking tool

Google's sunsetting the "CrOS Updates Serving" page in favor of the Chromium Dash portal, but there are better alternatives

Chromebooks have many benefits, including frequent updates and a relatively long support lifetime. But following which Chromebooks are running which version of Chrome OS can be tricky without some help. For years, Google has kept track of which models are running which version across Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary channels at a dedicated site. Unfortunately for anyone trying to keep track of update rollouts at home, Google's moving things over to the Chromium Dash portal — it's prettier but not quite as easy to find your Chromebook or the right numbers in.

We all probably found that one killer Chromebook deal on Amazon or Walmart that (on paper) appears to be an incredible value for the money. The average, less-informed buyer immediately jumped on the deal, because why wouldn't they? After all, its workhorse specifications are more than enough for basic tasks like Zoom, schoolwork, and light gaming. And for an asking price of just a few hundred bucks, they would be a fool to look elsewhere, right?

Google Chromebooks, just like smartphones, need access to OS updates to stay secure and up-to-date on the latest features. But also just like phones, they only get updates for so long — something we've made sure to warn you about when shopping for a Chromebook, lest you get stuck with a model whose support lifespan is about to run out. Now one group of devices is getting an unexpected reprieve, as Google extends updates for certain Lenovo Chromebooks through June of 2025.
