Google Finance Website Gets Mobile: Revamped For Android (And A Certain Other Mobile Operating System)

Google's Mobile blog (as well as their Finance blog) announced an update to the Google Finance mobile webpage on your Android (or... iOS) smartphone. The changes certainly aren't subtle: Google has streamlined finance to appear very similar to all the in-browser Google mobile web-apps. As an Android user, you may be asking why Google bothered - there's already a Google Finance app on the Android Market. The answer? The website, simply put, is just a lot more awesome.

Google Takes Android Voice Search To The Next Level With Voice Actions

Today’s Google Mobile even certainly did not disappoint. In addition to some minor improvements in Google Search, such as the ability to call businesses and play music from the web, Google introduced Voice Actions, a huge update to Android’s Voice Search application.

The video below demonstrates all the capabilities of the new application. If you’ve used Google’s speech-to-text functions before, you’ll know how well they work, and Voice Actions simply expands on that in a very powerful way.

Swiftkey Beta Now Updated To Include Speech-To-Text! Also Includes Various Fixes And Improvements

All I can say is “YAY—FINALLY!” Can you tell that I am totally psyched about the addition of speech-to-text to Swiftkey?

If you recall, I did a brief review on Swiftkey beta back in mid-July. I have been using this keyboard exclusively since that time and have not looked back. In my humble opinion, it is better than any keyboard, including Swype, that I have tested to date on my Droid Incredible.

It was only 5 days ago we offered up our readers licenses to tenCube’s phone security and locator app, WaveSecure. We were utterly impressed by the app’s rich feature set, and its clear focus on presenting itself in a professional and well-polished fashion.

Apparently McAfee was of a similar opinion. In a lengthy press release (shown below), McAfee announced they had acquired tenCube (who develop WaveSecure). What does it mean? We’ll probably be seeing a McAfee-branded WaveSecure hitting the Android Market fairly soon, perhaps sporting some exciting new features.

Android Developers UI Design Tips Presentation Aims To Homogenize Android App Interfaces In The Style Of Twitter, Facebook, And Yelp

Ever notice how Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp all use (nearly) the same start screen implementation?

snap20100726_155133 snap20100726_155137 snap20100726_155143

Apparently this is no coincidence. A presentation given at an Android Developer conference is urging app developers to conform to this design when developing their own apps. Why? Consistency lends itself to usability.

Android has long been a victim of its own openness—many claim it is a “geek” or “technophile” operating system. This stigma can, in part, be traced to the fact that Android apps have not been held accountable to any but the most lax standards (Eg, doesn’t blow up your phone) to be featured in the Android Market.
