Google pulls the plug on Androidify, but older versions of the app still work (APK Download)

Google’s numerous side projects include plenty of experimental apps and services canceled before their time, and few get to live as long as Androidify has. Released in 2011, the quirky little app allowed you to customize the iconic green Android bot with clothes, shoes, and whatnots. Even though the app didn’t see an update after 2016, it persisted all this while alongside its web peer. But now, Androidify is gone from both the Play Store and web, probably for good.

Google's Androidify App Updated With New Holiday Items And Accessories, Including Ugly Sweaters And Pretty Phones

The ugly Christmas sweater phenomenon seems to be yet another case of public trends where the fundamentally undesirable is somehow turned into a nouveau fashion statement, like Uggs or Hummers. While an intense examination of the psychology behind their resurgence would be an interesting application of our time, I'm not paid to write about wooly jumpers. If all you want for Christmas is an Android avatar with a tasteless sweater, then check your Androidify app for the latest update.

Androidify App Updated To v4.0 With New Clothing Items And Animations, Plus Evidence Of A Virtual Pride Parade [APK Download And Mini Teardown]

Google has started rolling out a new version of Androidify, and as with most of Google's apps, it's a staged rollout. Fear not, we've got the APK for you on APK Mirror. Upon installing Androidify 4.0, you'll see a ton of new clothing and animations, helpfully labeled as "new." We've also dug into the APK to see if there's anything interesting, and indeed there is.

Google Releases An Androidify Commercial Just For India Highlighting 5.1 And Android One

Google's animated commercials filled with dozens of avatars from the Androidify app are always fun to watch. The latest ad specifically targets the booming smartphone market in India, by showing off the Android One series of low-cost devices and highlighting their recent upgrade to Lollipop 5.1. (Breathe it in, One owners: you get 5.1 before the Nexus 9.) The new ad was posted to Google India's YouTube page this morning.

The commercial is pretty basic, following the formula from previous entries in the series: start off slow, rude interruption, rock out. A few minutes of incompetent transliteration on Google tells me that the song is a more poppy version of "Koi Yahan Aha Nache Nache" from the 1982 Bollywood movie Disco Dancer.

[Video] Google Japan Set Up 300 Androidify Characters As A Joyful Coordinated Chorus

What would 300 singing Androids sound like? Very cute. Impossibly cute. Like a marshmallow of kawaii wrapped in a cotton-candy of adorable and sprinkled on top of a rainbow of charm. It would also be very cool. Like a groovy logistical nightmare hidden inside a fun technical challenge. But that's what the Google Japan team has managed to produce: a chorus of 300 different but perfectly synchronized, lovable, dancing and singing Androidify characters, each coming alive inside its own phone or tablet to perform a rendition of The Hymn Of Joy, from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 (fourth movement).

I can't tell if the lyrics are Japanese (my only knowledge of the language stops at Arigato, Watashi WaNiSan, and Konnichiwa) or some Despicable Me-inspired language.

Androidify Updated To v3.0 With NBA Team Uniforms And A Ton Of New Items [APK Download]

I gather basketball is the next big sports thing in the US now that the Superbowl is over. Well, Google is getting excited with an update to the Androidify app. In the new v3.0 app, you've got the option of equipping your Android character with the garb of your favorite team. That's in addition to a bunch of new items and looks, many of which go nicely with your basketball-themed bugdroid.

The Androidify app is good enough to label everything that's new. That includes the entire NBA category of course, but there are a fair number of new items in the categories too.

Google Debuts Four More Ads Starring The Cartoon Androidify Figures

The advertising for the latest round of Android software and devices has been pretty catchy. Have you seen the "party" ad? Nice. Google just posted four more short 45-second spots to the official Android account on YouTube, so you can expect to see these pop up on American television over the next few weeks. All of them star the cartoony Androidify figures, presumably including at least some created by users of the official app.

The first ad is probably familiar for anyone who's taken an international flight. (Going to and from the last Mobile World Congress, I must have seen Krrish 3 at least three times over.) The lady with a cartoon Nexus 9 doesn't seem bothered by the 4:3 aspect ratio, either - maybe she's watching a really old horror movie.

The Androidify App Has Been Resurrected With A Big Holiday Update

Androidify was a neat distraction when it came out a few years back, but it quickly fell by the wayside. Forgotten, it waited in the Play Store for its chance to shine again, and here we are. Google has updated Androidify with a new UI and some spiffy holiday duds.
