Magisk dev finally achieves root on Android Q for the Pixel 3

Along with many other security-related updates, Android Q also changed how system partitions work for the Pixel 3 and 3a to allow the seamless installation of Generic System Images through dynamic system updates and improve general system safety. A side effect of these new logical partitions is a complete shift in the way root access can be enabled. Previously, Magisk developer John Wu stated that this would mean that Android Q couldn't be rooted on newer devices for quite some time going forward. But as always, Wu surpassed himself and announced that he achieved the first working full root on a Pixel 3XL running Android Q Beta 4.

[Update: New OTA rolling out] Some Pixel phones are bootlooping on Q Beta 4, but a factory reset fixes things

Android Q Beta 4 came out earlier today, and though there don't seem to be as many new things as with prior Beta releases, it's nice to have notification swiping as God intended and the rotation lock button back. However, it's not all good news; some people are reporting issues with bootlooping when attempting to update to Q Beta 4, primarily those with Pixel 2 XLs.

Here are all the small changes in Android Q Beta 4

We've already covered well over 200 changes in the public betas of Android Q, but many of those are smaller tweaks that aren't quite important enough to be covered in dedicated posts. Following our coverage of Beta 1, 2, and 3, here are all the minor changes in Android Q Beta 4.

Android Q's Adaptive sleep placeholder now 'Screen attention' in Android Q Beta 4

You may remember the "Adaptive sleep" option that was spotted back with Android Q Beta 3. At the time, Google told us it was a placeholder for Android OEMs to use. According to some digging through the recent Android Q Beta 4 images by the folks at XDA Developers, the feature is now called "Screen attention," and it has picked up a new animation to go with it — that's an awful lot of work for Google to make on an OEM placeholder.

Android Q's Recents screen highlights apps that are about to be paused by Digital Wellbeing

Changes are afoot with Digital Wellbeing. In the past few weeks, we've seen Google confirm that the service doesn't affect the performance of Pixel devices, but more importantly, we've also spotted a new day selector for Wind Down mode and a pause button integrated in the launcher's app shortcuts and Recents. It's this latter aspect that has been improved further in Android Q Beta 4. Now, the app switcher will tell you when an app you've been using is about to be paused by Digital Wellbeing.

[Update: Confirmed but not live] Android Q Beta 4 turns your phone's power button into a wallet shortcut

Being a Samsung Pay user, I really appreciate how convenient it is to summon the app when I'm about to pay or need to show my membership card to the cashier. Indeed, a simple swipe up from the lock or home screen brings up my wallet. Apple and Google have taken a different approach, where their payment software is automatically launched when you place your device near an RFID reader. However, iOS users can also double tap the power button to bring up Apple Pay, which is — at least in my opinion — more convenient, as it lets you choose the card you want to pay with before completing the transaction.

Smart Lock might be rebranded to 'Pixel Presence' on Android Q

Smart Lock has been a useful companion to Android users ever since the security feature was introduced with Lollipop in 2014. Not too much has changed about it since its conception, though. You can let your phone stay unlocked automatically when you're at a trusted location, or when you're connected to trusted Bluetooth devices. There are also options for on-body detection, trusted face, and Voice Match, which I wouldn't recommend since they're effortless to circumvent. Now, Smart Lock might be ripe for a rebranding in Android Q, since a lot of people now receive a toast that their phones are "Kept unlocked by Pixel Presence" on Android Q Beta 4.

Android Q Beta 4 moves the lock icon on the lockscreen to the top

The fourth Android Q beta doesn't have as many changes as prior versions did, though there are still some subtle tweaks here and there. One instance of this is the lock button on the lockscreen — for some reason, Google has chosen to relocate it from the bottom to the top.

'Face authentication' details in Android Q Beta 4 tease upcoming biometric support

Google's plans for better face recognition have been known for a while. After all, Apple's Face ID is so good that Google has to do something to play catch-up. According to teardowns by both 9to5Google and XDA Developers, new "face authentication" labels (strings) for settings options are hidden in Android Q Beta 4, and a search of the Settings app is showing related settings for some.
