Android Pie Go Edition is coming this fall

The first release of Android Go Edition, based on 8.1 Oreo, was... not great. On the plus side, that means there's lots of room for improvement. Google today announced the next major release, named "Android 9 Pie (Go edition)," with storage improvements as the highlight feature.

While Android Pie rolls out to phones from Google and Essential, most OEMs haven't announced which devices will receive the update. HTC revealed a few days ago which of its phones are being updated, and now it's Motorola's turn.

[Update x2: Will be fixed soon] 2016 Pixel XL owners experiencing issues with quick chargers after Android Pie update

Over the past few weeks, some owners of the 2016 Pixel XL have reported problems using quick chargers on Android P. For most of that time, Android P was still in beta, so bugs were to be expected. Unfortunately, issues with quick charging are still present in the final 9.0 release.

[Update: Appears to be resolved] Gear devices broken on Pie for some, Samsung says it's working on fix

This week has been an exciting one for us Android geeks, what with the stable release of Pie and all. For some (including me), however, that enthusiasm for the latest version of our favorite mobile OS was a bit tempered. See, the update messed with our Gear devices (S2, S3, Icon X) and now they won't connect — though, some people are saying their stuff is fine. Thing is, this has been a known issue since at least Developer Preview 2 several months ago, but Samsung says it's working on a fix.

Android 9 Pie adds support for Wi-Fi Direct printing

Earlier this year, AOSP commits revealed that Android 9.0 would support printing via Wi-Fi Direct. Put simply, it would allow your phone to print documents over a peer-to-peer connection (without being on the same Wi-Fi network). Some manufacturers have added Wi-Fi Direct support to their own print service plugins, but the native Android print service didn't have it.

Android Pie includes 'key rotation,' a way for developers to change app signatures

Every Android app is signed with a cryptographic signature. When the app is updated, Android will compare the signatures of the new and old versions, and only allow the update if they match. This is far more secure than having no signing method, but it's not perfect. Development teams have to share a single key, and if a key is lost, a new Play Store listing has to be created.

Android Pie finally fixes the Wear OS phone call audio bug after 10 months

In late 2017, Wear OS users reported via Google's issue tracker that Bluetooth call audio was thoroughly busted. Then, they waited... and waited. This has been going on for so long that Wear OS was still Android Wear when the issue was initially reported. At last, we're getting confirmation from users that the bug has been patched in Android 9 Pie. It only took Google 10 months.

[Update: Maybe not] The Pixel 3 will only have gesture navigation, with no option for standard nav buttons

As we all know by now, Google's implementation of gesture navigation is pretty lackluster. Given that it still takes up the same amount of space as the regular nav bar, it doesn't have any real benefits and just makes things confusing. You'll probably be disappointed to hear that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will ship with gesture navigation, and there won't be an option to use the standard three-button layout that's been part of Android for years.

[Update: Security bulletins] Android 9 Pie system images and OTA files are available for download

Today is the big day—after months of beta builds and speculation, Android 9 Pie is rolling out to Pixels (and at least one other phone). You don't need to wait for the Pixel OTA, though. Google is ready to go with OTA files and full system images for the 2016 and 2017 Pixel devices.
