Early glimpse at Android Pie with Samsung Experience 10 reveals 'night theme,' new gesture control

Early glimpse at Android Pie with Samsung Experience 10 reveals 'night theme,' new gesture control

Since Samsung isn't exactly known for lightning fast updates, it's always a welcome surprise to see details of a new build ahead of time. XDA Developers, working with OTA firmware download tool Firmware.science, has managed to provide us with just that by installing a test build of the Samsung Experience 10 update based on Android 9 Pie for the Samsung Galaxy S9+. The development build, while not polished, reveals a fairly large design overhaul with a focus on rounded edges. Among the most compelling new features: a 'night theme' and new gesture and motion options.

What would you change in Android 9 Pie?

What would you change in Android 9 Pie?

Android 9 Pie officially landed just over a month ago, but we've been collectively anticipating the changes it brought since the first developer preview was released over six months ago. In that time, we've painstakingly assembled an extensive list of the features and tweaks Google delivered. Most of our readers probably know the details of this latest version backward and forward at this point, and so we're curious: If you could, what would you change in Android P?

Digital Wellbeing update adds grayscale tile, app drawer icon, and more [APK Download]

Google is still testing its Pie-based Digital Wellbeing features on Pixels, but it seems to be coming along nicely. A new update rolled out today that addresses several pain points with the Wellbeing tools. Making the most important features more accessible seems to be the theme. For example, you can open the Wellbeing menu with an app shortcut rather than tediously digging into the settings. If you want that right now, we've got an APK for you.

Essential Phone gets September security update immediately following Google's release

Essential Phone gets September security update immediately following Google's release

Even though a May report suggested that Essential has canned its second-generation phone (an assertion the company didn't fully contradict), the first Essential Phone remains a cult favorite. In large part, that's because the company pushes out Android updates in near tandem with Google — and that was no exception with the September 2018 Android Pie update released today.

August 2018 Android platform distribution numbers are out: Oreo up another 2.5%, no sign of Pie (yet)

August 2018 Android platform distribution numbers are out: Oreo up another 2.5%, no sign of Pie (yet)

August isn't even properly over, but already Google has pushed the month's platform distribution numbers, detailing the precise statistics of Android versions used across devices. Last month's statistics were of particular interest after the two-month gap, resulting in some inflated numbers, but this month things are back to normal. As always, newer versions of Android are up, and older versions are (mostly) down. Interestingly, Pie has yet to rear its head, despite launching earlier this month.

Sony Xperia XZ3 is an incremental improvement over the XZ2, shipping in September with Android 9 Pie

Android Pie Go Edition is coming this fall

The first release of Android Go Edition, based on 8.1 Oreo, was... not great. On the plus side, that means there's lots of room for improvement. Google today announced the next major release, named "Android 9 Pie (Go edition)," with storage improvements as the highlight feature.

[Update x2: Will be fixed soon] 2016 Pixel XL owners experiencing issues with quick chargers after Android Pie update

Over the past few weeks, some owners of the 2016 Pixel XL have reported problems using quick chargers on Android P. For most of that time, Android P was still in beta, so bugs were to be expected. Unfortunately, issues with quick charging are still present in the final 9.0 release.

[Update: Appears to be resolved] Gear devices broken on Pie for some, Samsung says it's working on fix

[Update: Appears to be resolved] Gear devices broken on Pie for some, Samsung says it's working on fix

This week has been an exciting one for us Android geeks, what with the stable release of Pie and all. For some (including me), however, that enthusiasm for the latest version of our favorite mobile OS was a bit tempered. See, the update messed with our Gear devices (S2, S3, Icon X) and now they won't connect — though, some people are saying their stuff is fine. Thing is, this has been a known issue since at least Developer Preview 2 several months ago, but Samsung says it's working on a fix.
