The first Android 8.1 beta is rolling out to the Essential Phone

Essential launched its first phone last year with Nougat, but it promised a quick update to Oreo. Well, sort of quick. We're still waiting for the final update, and the company recently decided to skip 8.0 altogether. Sure enough, the first Android 8.1 beta is rolling out as an OTA.

Android 8.1 officially rolls out to the Nokia 8

Well, that didn't take long. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Nokia opened up the beta test for Android 8.1 on the Nokia 8, and now the beta is over and the update is officially rolling out to everyone.

The update was announced by Juho Sarvikas on Twitter and has started rolling out to users now with several sharing screenshots of the OTA downloading on their device. It weighs 1.5GB and brings the February security patch along with all the small and large improvements of Android 8.1. The most important of those are battery level reporting for Bluetooth devices and the possibility to continue restoring a backup after the initial setup, along with visual tweaks to the power menu and a correct hamburger emoji.

Nokia opens up Android 8.1 beta for the Nokia 8

Treble and bootloader aside, HMD is doing a great job at providing as close to a "Googley" Android experience to Nokia users as possible. While open Wi-Fi networks are nice to find, they can sometimes be so slow that you'd prefer to just use your precious mobile data. Google seems to agree with this, having implemented these Wi-Fi speed labels for open networks in Android 8.1 Oreo to let users decide whether they should connect to a certain unknown network.

Google is looking into Android 8.1 lockscreen swipe issues on Pixel devices

I'd wager that most owners of Pixel phones use the fingerprint sensors on the back to unlock their phones, but there are circumstances in which using the backup PIN, pattern, or password is necessary. Many Pixel owners, myself included, have noticed that it's become rather difficult to swipe the lockscreen up on Android 8.1 Oreo. Google is aware of the problem and is looking into it.

[Update: Available for more devices] OmniROM begins weekly Oreo 8.1 builds

OmniROM was a popular custom ROM back in the Jelly Bean/KitKat era, especially because of its multi-window feature and wide device support. The project has scaled back its reach over the years, like most custom ROMs (except LineageOS), but it still maintains a dedicated user base.

January 2018 platform distribution numbers show Oreo still at less than 1%

The time has come again for Google to provide an overview of what versions of Android are out there in the wild. Last month saw some big (proportional) gains for Oreo as most other versions of Android continued to slide. This time, we have the first appearance of Android 8.1, but Oreo's adoption is still in lock-step with Nougat last year.

Android 8.1 update caused some Pixel C tablets to factory reset, Google says it's fixed

When a manufacturer releases a system update, there is a general assumption that the update will not break everything. If you have a Pixel C that hasn't received the Android 8.1 update yet (or you've been holding off), consider yourself lucky - many users discovered that the OTA triggered a factory reset.

Google is pushing final 8.1 OTA updates to Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices on the beta

Android 8.1 Oreo is final just a few weeks after the second developer preview rolled out. You can get the system images and OTA files for manual installation, and OTAs are hitting phones running 8.0. That's not all—devices in the developer preview that were running DP2 are also seeing an OTA update today.
